…..Bill's police state thread changed my mind.

I had an experience on Sunday with the local PD. First I want to say that I am a supporter of LEO's and I appreciate what they do nd I'd guess for the most part their job probably sucks. That being said my encounter on Sunday REALLY pissed me off. I want y'all's opinions on it and tell me if I'm mad for no reason.

We had gone kayaking on Saturday and I was bringing my yaks back to my warehouse. My wife and I were headed to the club to work on a few projects so we were going to drop the yaks off on the way. I accidentally set off the alarm. I put in my code but not in time. When TCI (our service provider) called I gave them my name and our password. I then reset the code, left the building and locked the gate. We left and got about 5 miles down the road when my dad calls. He's the first number on TCI's call list. He said the cops were on the way to the warehouse. I explained what happened but I went ahead and turned around to go tell the cops it was all clear. Keep in mind I didn't have to do this. The cops couldn't have gotten on to the property to check things out. I went back as a courtesy.

We get back to the warehouse and I parked outside of my gate and turned my truck off. We waited a few minutes and a cop finally pulls up. This is probably 10+ minutes after the alarm had gone off. (good thing it wasn't an actually emergency) He pulls up beside me and asks "what am I doing there?" I proceed to explain what happened and he asks "why am I here on a Sunday?" "What reason do you have to be here?" "If you have a reason to be here why don't you know your code?" I continue to answer his questions. He then says "why don't you go ahead and give me your ID.....so I can check you out and cover my butt." By this time cop #2 had showed up.

In hind-sight at that point I should have told him to shove his thumb up his dickhole but I gave him my ID. He called it in and asked the dispatcher to "run this guy." I saw red at that moment but I didn't say anything. He then told the dispatcher that I was claiming to be an employee. I corrected him and said I'm the owner. He said "in that case why don't you know your code?" This went on for another few minutes and the dispatcher came back said I was "clean" and some other code/numbers. He gave me back my ID and then left.

Keep in mind I'm parked on my driveway going into my parking lot outside of the locked gate. Legally I could have been there even if I didn't own the property.

Did he go too far?
Am I pissed for no reason?
Should I have told him to go phuck the other cop in the ear?

I can't blame you for being frustrated, but the officer was doing his job. What if you were somebody breaking in, wouldn't you have wanted them to treat that person the same way? The LEO had no way of knowing if you were being truthful with him. By causing agitation, they can sometimes bring out the truth in somebody.

Just my $.02

He had no idea who you were. You could have been waiting for your buddies to come out of the building, or leaving yourself with contents from within the building.

Here’s a question piggy backing off this....

I see on Live Pd these cops pull up to people hanging out in a public area and asking for ID’s. Do those people have to give them Id’s or can they tell the cops to screw off? I’m all for the cops checking people with suspicion of wrongdoing, but if I’m just hanging out minding my own business, so I have to give them an ID?

Cop was a being a dick because he could. I’d still be pissed too. JW was this Oxford PD or Calhoun county. Most of the time the deputy’s are pretty laid back. Oxford thinks they are LAPD. From my experience anyways

I might have answered "well hell yes I know my code. Walk over here and I will cut the alarm off for you to see." Other than that, sounds like he was mostly doing what he needed to do to verify identity.

Why don’t you know your code seems like a reasonable question.

Guy was doing his job. They get lied to 95% of the time they talk to someone. I understand your frustration because you know you're in the right, but he didn't.

OPD

I do know the code. I entered the building, turned it off just not in time, TCI called and I gave them the password, then reset the alarm and left. TCI called the OPD for some reason even though the correct code had been entered. The alarm wasn't going off when the cops arrived. The alarm had been off for at least 10 minutes at that time.

I was 5 minutes down the road and then drove back.

Hat's off to your local pd for doing a good job! I think you should have got on the speakerphone in front of the cops with your alarm company that would verify you are the current contact on the account while you waiting inside an open gate in your car. By being inside the gate that would probably have been enough to put their mind at ease to let them know you had access if not talking with alarm company would have settled it I think. Buy a cop a lunch one day to show some appreciation and let them do their job next time. Good post!

I actually almost ALWAYS buy cops lunch when I see them in the same restaurant I'm in.

The next time I see that dickhead I will go out of my way to buy everyone's lunch but his.

They can ask and you can refuse. Nothing they can legally do unless they can articulate a specific crime your suspected of.

There was a woman broke down at the red light in front of the Fred’s on 78 and I stopped to help her. In 5 mins there was 2 cruisers with 4 cops there being asshats telling us to move the vehicle out of the road. Not a one of them helped me push it out of the road or help to get it back goin. Real stand up folks.

I'd give him some grace initially. He was just doing his job. If he continued to be a "richard" after getting it all sorted out, then yeah, I'd be pissed.

That's my point. He was a dickring out of the gate and continued even after he "ran me" and that's what pissed me off.

I completely understand your point of view and granted, some LEOs have an ax to grind 24-7. I guess I'd be a little more patient and understanding and know that it wasn't personal. He was doing his job and he's got to consider every single one of us a threat until proven otherwise. Maybe he could have been a little more courteous but his main objective is to keep your business safe, your community safe, and to make it home to his family at all costs. Having a family member who is a LEO and seeing the chit he deals with on a daily basis gives me a little more patience with them. Also, he has seen people just like you and seemingly innocent one second and in the blink of an eye, the scenario changes he's dealing with a convicted felon who wants to die and take a LEO with him. Chit gets real dangerous real fast sometimes.

Dick with a badge and gun, makes you appreciate a good cop when you run across one, few and far between. The younger they are the worse it is.

What would've pissed me off when he asked what am I doing there on Sunday after you told him that you owned the place and explained what had happen. Sounds like to me that he was on a power trip. And I also support law enforcement and have the upmost respect for them and what they do. But it's not any of his business why you were anywhere on Sunday.
