Welp, just put the girlfriend’s and my name into the hat for the KY elk hunt. Figure it may be a waste of 40 bucks but don’t know if you don’t play. Anyone else putting in for it this year or anyone here that has drawn before? If you’ve gone on this hunt before any advice?

I’ve put in every year since they’ve became legal to hunt there and haven’t gotten drawn yet. At this point, if I were to get drawn, I’d probably hire a guide.

I drew for a cow several years ago.
I enlisted the help of a guide. I hunted 5 minutes.

Well over a decade. No Luck.
And me too, I'd hire a guide if drawn.
Kill a Bull and then never apply again.

Dang. Seems a little anti climatic but sounds like a guide is the best bet if you get drawn. I should be able to sock away some funds if one of us gets drawn to make that possible. Granted the odds of getting a tag are slim at best... Thanks for the input fellas!

Negotiate with the guide on price. You might be surprised.

No. The cow rifle hunt is in December. It was freezing cold with a skiff of snow on the ground. We hunted a coal mine in Hazard Co. Got there early the day before. The guide rode us around. Showed us a pile of elk. Couple bulls lightly tickled antlers.
We got up real early the next morning. “Holding the spot” was kind of a big deal.
As it got daylight, the guide, my buddy and I walked down this road. We were going to glass and watch this big deep open draw in the mine. But we were walking down the road and an elk was coming up it.
He said, “Anthony, kill that elk.” Boom.
I wanted to drop it right in the road but I hit it behind the shoulder instead of in it.
It went off the bank. I went to the edge. Saw an elk and was getting ready to shoot again.
My buddy started laughing. He said, “Don’t shoot the dead one.” It was piled up.
A retired state trooper just down the hollow from us got a ticket that morning. Hey shot a spike for a cow. Not sure how it happened.
Mid-morning, a guy hunting with my outfitter killed a monster cow. She was like 500 lbs.
it was fun and the meat was delicious.
My wife won the game division of the Guntersville Wild Game Cookoff that spring with “Elk Lasagna.”
