Why does it seem like 50% of all tractor trailers have a license plate from Maine?

No clue but probably one/some combo of the following.

Just what you happen to be seeing or some tax/business loophole.

South Dakota has a similar deal. Open up an LLC there and pay $50/yr for your RV tag instead of $5,000. High taxes alter behavior.

Got to be taxes, my company is out of TX and we used to run Nebraska plates on all apportioned trucks and trailers

That surely can't be because of low registration/taxes...
