I was working the Civitan Pumpkin Patch 2 years ago. This idiot shows up with a big ass butcher knife. Says he and his girlfriend are going to carve a pumpkin. He’s all over the Patch. Talking to her on cell. She never shows. I never felt threatened but was just uneasy with him with the big ass knife. He laid it on the edge of the table and I hid it. He musta wandered around patch a half hour. Lawyer friend of mine stopped to buy pumpkins with his family. Noticed the guy acting strangely. He said “I’m calling the police.” I said do what you want. Cops came. Talked to him. He lived nearby and had just come from the methadone clinic. I just kept a wary eye on him. They escorted him home and got his big ass knife from me.

last week when it was storming. My BIL (co-worker) and I,had just left work, i was pulling up to the highway to turn on. A black dude jumped in front of my truck right before the stop sign, when i stopped he walked over to the passenger window i had just let down a few inches. I figured there must be something wrong for him to be out in this rain with the lightning popping like it was. Anyways he asks for a ride down the road. I looked in the back seat and said it was full, rifle and shotgun in case, hunting boots and jacket. When i looked back at him he was walking to the back door, I went to lock door but he had already opened it. He jumps in. So i say what the hell its on my way home and only a few miles down the road, I already had gun in my hand. We get a mile down the road and this joker starts moving around a bunch, grunting and growling. I'm getting a little nervous at this point. We get to level plains and he asks can i take him to enterprise. So i keep driving, the grunting and growling continue and i ask if he's alright, he don't even answer me. I'm real nervous at this point, I can see him in the rearview, so i'm watching every move thinking I'm fixing to have to burn through this dude any second. I look back again and this dude has his hands together and is praying (hands shaking). We get to enterprise and he wants to go to up the hill towards walmart, I tell him" this is the best i can do for ya" I pull up to the store and this fella gets out and runs toward the store high stepping like he's running through tall weeds. I think there might of been some mental illness combined with chemical problems with this guy, Its a damn shame you can't help folks for risk of finding crazy. Sounds like he had one touching cotton. Did he go straight to the crapper ?

First time I found myself under fire I dumped a full mag and fumbled around like a monkey trying to insert another one. Training is essential, but No amount of training can prepare you for the first time.

I bought a Sig 365 in 9mm last year for personal protection. My problem is training. I'm very comfortable with long guns being raised hunting and such. But a handgun? I just feel so unsure of myself. My stepson is a LEO and he has been working with me and getting me more comfortable and my accuracy is improving greatly. I'm still uneasy about CC just because I'm always aware of it on my person. I've thought about taking a course on self protection. The kind that teaches proper technique, cues to look for when some chit might go down, situational awareness, ect.
I've watched several of those YouTube videos about bad guys taking "the room temperature challenge" and that has really opened my eyes on how fast things can go south and that you better be prepared in your home, vehicle, in a parking lot, or under a shelter in a park trying to enjoy a smoke! I just want to get to the point that I'm super confident and comfortable with it. Not trying to hijack the thread but if any of you have been in my position, any advice y'all want to give, I'll gladly accept!

Dr. B The more you on carry the more comfortable you will be. I carry every day. The only time I don’t is when I am going in a courthouse or jail. I never even think about it being on me. Hell, I’ve actually carried in a courtroom once because I didn’t even think about it when I went in the courthouse.

touchin cotton. I don't think that was it, first black dude I've ever seen with snakebite piercings. He had speech impediment (boat ride joke impediment) everything about him was wrong, I've been around black people a bunch, this dude was weird. He kinda acted like touchin cotton, kinda like he done been shot/ DT/ mental break down/ something. I figured he was gonna be a problem to get out, but when I told him that was it, he bout jumped out in traffic, I had to tell him hang on. I drove to the store across road and dropped him under the canopy, in front of cameras. He high stepped it towards front door waving at folks. I should of videod it, but I cut out. All that loud azz growling had me on edge. His nervous energy, made me nervous. Not to mention, that lightning popping already had me jumpy. It was storming. Bamaeyedoc. The best way to win a fight is to avoid a fight. According to the Lee Gospels. The best way to get accurate is grip, stance, repetition and a full size 9mm. Once you're proficient with that than then you can upsize caliber.

7 years a go right after I retired I decided I needed a real handgun for personal defense. I wound up buying a Springfield XDM 40cal. About 6 months later September rolled around and I decided to go Teal hunting. So at 3:30 in the morning I am on the Mobile causeway cutting me a bundle of cane under Ed's Seafood parking lot lights. After Finishing cutting my cane and laying it in my boat, I proceeded west to the launch at Choccolata about 1/2 mile away. I drove slowly because I hadn't tied the cane in the boat and I didn't want it to blow out. mI had my Tundra lights on bright and saw no one on my way to launch. I pulled in the east entrance to parking area and proceeded the 100 yards or so down to the launch. No one, not even another vehicle was in the parking lot, 4:00am. As I approached the ramp I swung out toward road then backed boat up to waters edge. I the got out leaving drivers door open, I opened the back door took my cased shotgun and shell bag and walked back to boat placing them in boat. I then unlatched winch strap and hooked bow line on winch. I walked back to truck got in and backed boat into water. I then got back out leaving drivers door open and walked back to secure bow line to pier while I parked truck. About the time I reached the bac of truck I heard something and looked up and there were 5 young black men approaching me at a fast walk. I immediately knew I was in a bad situation. It was strange my mind started racing, everything went quiet. I glanced at my shotgun but knew there was no way to get it with boat floating 30' away on bowline. they were saying threatening things and making threatening jestures but my world was silent. my mind was racing. then It hit me my pistol was about 4 steps away on the truck console. The brothers by now had split 2 heading to the back of the truck and 2 toward the front of the truck with what appeared to be the leader coming straight to me. I stepped to the open truck door grabbed the pistol and turned around. he was maybe 8 feet from me as I did. When I came around and his eyes locked on that barrel that close to him his right hand came out of his pocket and his left of his nuts and up in the air they went. The first thing I had heard in 20 seconds or so was a very audible whoa! I really don't know how I keep my composure but I looked him straight in the eye and quote told them I recommended they take their ass on down the road. Thankfully the ones at the back of the truck made a wide swing around toward the front of the truck including the one in front of me and they begrudgingly walked on down the road. I am very thanful it turned out like it did but at the time it was happening if they had pushed it I would have done my best to kill everyone of them. I dialed 911 and the police picked them up as 2 of them were rummaging around behind Laps Restaurant. Nothing ever came of it though. Lesson I learned is always be vigilant of your surroundings. I am actually glad it never had to go to court because I couldn't swear to anything they said [my world went silent] but there was no mistaking they were threatening me. Rob me, beat me, kill me, I will never know and really glad I didn't find out!
I know hindsight is 20/20, but your situation illustrates why the “throw my pistol in the glove box “ mentality is so dangerous. I carry everywhere except work (TWIC area). Keep the pistol on your hip bc your hip is always where you’ll need your pistol.

I was involved in two situations where bad guys shot at me or at another officer, both times I would of been justified in shooting either bad guy....and both times I butt stroked the bad guys jaw with an 870 stock. Broke both of em jaws and knocked em out. End of fight. Hadn't planned on doing that but it seemed the quickest/best plan at that second.
