I know there has been alot of debate on the expiration date on safety harnesses. I'm not wanting to get into that again. This is the 5th year I have used my current harness and tether. Plan of buying a new harness and tether before next season. Question is....what to do with the old harness? Cut it up and throw in trash?

I used an upper body safety harness for 25 years and finally bought a spider harness about 5 years ago and threw my old one in the junk pile.

I think this started because OSHA had mandated a 5 year life on industrial harnesses. They have since rescinded the 5 year rule and placed the burden on the company to develop their own policy to inspect their harnesses, discarding when needed. For what it’s worth. Nope. Started cause of lawyers and their ability to extract huge sums of money on tragic situations. This should be viewed through that lens.

I have a HSS harness that’s probably 15 yrs old. So old I can’t read the sticker. It’s still in good shape and it’s always been kept inside. If you think about it.....you don’t change your seat belts in your car. It’s the same material. It stays out of sunlight. I’m not that concerned about it. I agree. Why get rid of one when it’s in perfect condition?

You boys do what you want, but I wouldn’t climb a tree with an expired harness or ONE THAT DOESNT HAVE A FOOT STIRRUP. After sittin through hours of fall prevention and harness training, I came to realization that falling from a stand is MUCH MORE dangerous that I thought.
If you don’t have a stirrup to take the weight off your legs, you will start losing circulation and could be unconscious in as little as 4 min. You don’t have long to live hanging in a harness. Let’s be real... the chances of help reaching us in 4 mins is almost zero.
Also, a shock absorbing lanyard is a must. A proper shock absorbing lanyard will keep your shock under 900 lbs. 1800lbs is approaching fatal... a 6’ fall with a non shock absorbing lanyard can exert about 7800lbs.

I've always said if you fall, you better have a plan to get out of the harness as soon as possible. I keep a small knife in the pocket of my harness. If I can't get back in the stand within a couple of minutes, I'm cutting the line and bear hugging down the tree or taking my chances hitting the ground at least feet first.
