I just acquired a Winchester mod 70 pre 1964 in .264 Win mag. I know nothing about this caliber. I’d like to possibly shoot a deer with it. Anyone have any experience with this cal on deer?

You just want the .338's little brother. Wins 264 is a Lazer beam of death on deer use the 120's or 140's. It have the 26 inch barrel?

Ha, it's a GREAT calibre, my favorite deer killer. Get some 125gr Nosler Partition loads and get to killing like a laser beam. or 130ge Nosler Accubonds.

My dad had one exactly as you describe. I wish he never got rid of it. He got it from an old guy who owned a small gun shop in town and always had a cigar in his mouth. Years later, I could still smell the cigar smoke on the old wooden stock.

The one thing I remember about that rifle was the recoil. It would knock the snot out of you, so you had to be determined to shoot it.

Brings back good memories.

Excellent caliber, in my opinion the original creedmore. Ballistics similar to .257 weatherby. Remington 7mm mag, 257 weatherby, and win 264 mag all use the same
Brass just different caliber bullets. As with big cases with bottle necks you can shoot the barrels out. I did this one time , it took about 2000 rounds though.

It's not how much money you make, but how much you can keep.

.264 Win Mag is what the creedmoor folks all THINK they are shooting. Hell of a deer killer.

140 grain Berger VLD Hunter also works great.

to me, my 264WM/125 has less recoil than my 270/130 does, way less than any 300 mag I have shot. My 4'11" wife shot it for years. She killed a big old six point at 350 yards with only his neck and head visible.

Yep, these are not hard kicking guns. I have a current production M70 super grade in this caliber and its very easy to shoot. I'm guessing your pre 64 may have a steel butt plate and not a pad. My second cousin told me he bought a featherweight model way back when they introduced this gun and he shot a box of shells through it. Said his shoulder was bruised something terrible.

That 125 partition will be fast and flat out to 400 yards or so, and a deer slayer for sure.

Please post pictures of your new acquisition so those of us who love pre 64 Winnys can drool. 😀

Main that is one fine caliber! I have two one a ruger Hawkeye and the other a abolt 2 medallion and both are very accurate. Mine loves 140gr but I'm wanting to try some lighter bullets.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a picture of that Super Grade too!

Double check the twist.....most factory stuff had 1:9, which will be just fine unless you want to use really long bullets for long range stuff.
