Cool research here. A guy put fence posts of all different species in the 1930’s and they have been followed ever since. This report is from 1985, where Osage orange (or bodock) had a 0% failure rate. Cedar was nowhere close. If you have to cut your own posts, use this wood, if you can.

We have mock orange tree fence post at our property down in South Montgomery that are as old as me. Lightning and cows can’t hurt them.

Pretty neat. However, they tested western cedars. Mountain grown eastern red cedar can be very durable.

Used to live in Montgomery and my dad would tell me that a mock orange post will wear the post hole out.

Black Locust is the weapon of choice in this area , if you can find them. There's some across the road from my house my granddaddy put in the ground in 1968 . Most are still in good shape and holding wire.

I have some mock orange fence posts on my property line that have been there since the 40's or 50's that'll be there when I'm dead and gone. The wood is so hard you couldn't drive a nail in them with a jackhammer

We've got a few black locust posts left that are close to 40 years old. Most of the load my dad bought back then were split. Nearly all the split ones are gone. There were some smaller ones that were not split. Some of those are still here.

Osage Orange/ Bowdock, or Boi' de' arc', Wood of the bow, is what Native Americans preferred to make their bows out of for obvious reasons. Its strong, durable, pliable, and lasts forever. I have seen it make chainsaws spark and dont you dare put it in a campfire cause it will burn for two days and shoot off sparks.

I can’t verify this but I’ve had more than one old farmer tell me that a posts lasts a lot longer if it’s put in the ground “upside down”..... as is with the butt end of the post in the air and the top end stuck in the ground. The theory is that a post with the butt end put in the ground would continue to draw water and therefore rot quicker.
I walked an old fence with him once and he pointed out the ones his daddy had “put in wrong” when he was a kid. There was a noticeable difference

That is very interesting. It would take a long time to prove or disprove!

A landowner I knew in the mid 70's bought a bunch of plastic fence post out of South America. I think they were recycled baby diapers. They are just as good as the day he put them in the ground, all of them are about 5 1/2" diameter.

Piling are driven in “upside down” and so are fence posts by commercial fencing operations.

I wonder if that has more to do with those pilings being tapered at “top” and easier to drive that side in first.

I’d never seen the orange tree til a few years ago. Pretty wicked tree I’d just hate cutting my yard if I had some.

There's a reason why you primarily find Osage on fence rows and property lines.
In my experience, southern cedar is the worst wood to use for anything. If it's not already rotten, when you cut it, then it'll be rotten within a year.
