Not sure how it works. My Dad took the flight. VA covered every penny. Lucky for sure! When I spoke with the life flight “adjuster” I kind of got the sense the whole thing is a scam. They wanted all kinds of other types of insurance info. Seemed like they were looking for anyway possible to get $$$.

Anyway, thankfully the VA approved and paid for it all. I don’t know the amount they settled on, but have a hard time believing it was the $45k+.

My wife's bill was $17500 and I thought it was high!

Given that the patients to be flown are usually extremely critical, many times the chopper doesn't even get to the destination before they are told they are no longer needed after 60 miles in. I'd bet they eat that cost.

I will NOT buy any more damn insurance! Most of it is a scam that feeds off of one’s fear.

A lady we know was billed for over 25K after insurance for her husband medflight. I think they worked with her and setup payments.
After I rolled a 4 wheeler on a site prep burn last year, all I could think is don't call medflight cause we haven't setup our account yet.

Heck I'm still trying to figure out the way I was billed for my hospital testing etc... when I kept seeing signs if I prepaid the cost for said procedure it was a 1/3 of what I my insurance was billed.
I'm assuming medflights use a similar pricing structure?

$37k and change bill. Insurance was not going to pay any of it to start with. I'm of course flipping out as to what I'm gonna do.

I'm in bed at home recovering a few weeks later and I see the same Air Medivac helicopter has delivered a football (the game ball. whatever that means) to J U Blacksher High School's opening football game. I can only presume as a publicity stunt.

WHO paid for THAT flight? I about lost my shucks over that one.

I was NOT bleeding much at all, wasn't unconscious, wasn't in cardiac arrest. Why did I need the helicopter? Who made that call? Local yokel on the Rescue Squad. You can just imagine what an ethical/moral dilemma it is to feel anger toward people who came to get you off the side of the road.

Yeah it's 100% a PR flight. It's private EMS. They are out to turn a profit by providing a service. Can't get many calls if nobody knows you exist. But please don't take it out on the flight crew! They don't get paid for their efforts and skills anywhere near what their employers charge patients. And yeah, local volunteers often activate birds when they're not needed. Heck, major city fire departments fly crap all the time that doesn't need to go by air. Some of that is incompetence, but sometimes it's just a judgement call. Can't see that liver laceration from the side of the road.

Oh, and cardiac arrests aren't flown. Can't do CPR inside a Bell 407. In fact, they have to land if the patient codes in the air and have a ground ambulance intercept and transport.

If you're in central AL, esp Walker Co. area, RAMS charges $40/yr individual, and $60/yr family.

Wonder why there is such a hole in the coverage area in the Montgomery to Dothan area? Could this be covered by another company?

I dont think its a hole in coverage, just in heli companies there. The one closest to it covers it was my understanding. Id call them and see what they say.

The airspace around Montgomery and Dothan is an obstacle course.
Only a fool flies anywhere near those places.

Well we have an air ambulance service in the Montgomery area that flies to Baptist South, can't remember the name.

I think I am going to ask BCBS about this........~

Let us know what you find out. I've thought of getting in on one of these but it is kind of confusing if you travel around as much as I do.

It might be Haynes. I know they run ambulances there, in Troy and in Opp and I know they have some helicopters.

It is Haynes. Why would these providers not be in the network. There would be alot of unpaid Bill's for this I would imagine. Its beneficial for them to be.

It be's that way sometimes.

Even if you pay one company and travel the state like I do, you still could end up on the wrong chopper and owe a fortune.

I signed up for AirMedCare network about 4 months ago. It was 350.00 for 3 years of coverage.
