I see folks using these in houses and have to ask, do theses things not put off any sent?? Or is it critical when using one to hunt facing the wind? Looking into getting one but would have to assume they put off some gas or propane smell....

They put off a scent but it’s not that noticeable. Kind of like a thermacell if a deer smells your buddy heater it was also going to smell you anyways. I love sitting in a ground blind on a cold morning with a buddy heater and a thermos of coffee. It’s real easy to sit until lunch if you’re not cold, you’re comfortable, and you have a hot pot of coffe to drink.

Use mine in ground blinds during cold weather and have never been busted by a deer because of it. When you get older comfort means more than a deer smelling you

It is critical to hunt the wind with or without one.

Which is impossible in the south.

I agree with you gotta play the wind regardless.

I use one of these in the permanent blind. It's cheaper, has lasted for years, and after it cools you can slip a gallon size freezer/storage bag over it to keep the crap out of it. I just leave it attached to the cylinder and covered all summer in the blind. Got it from Academy Sport IIRC.

Only thing you have to worry about is the glow . It'll light up a blind near dark.

Used this to heat ground blinds in Nebraska in January (really effing cold) on a number of occasions. Shot a lot of deer using that setup and haven't had any issues getting winded. At least not that we're aware of...

Keep in mind this was on private land on a river in Nebraska. In other words, more deer than you can shake a stick at.

Buddy Heaters are the only way to go in KS. Most important thing besides my rifle I take there.

Thanks guys. May be an option as my cold weather gear is a little snug this year for some reason...😆

I have used the buddy heater many times. Nothing like it to keep a shooting house warm in the winter.

It produces heat. Heat rises therefore the propane smell should rise with it. I would think that by time the propane smell cools down enough to fall it would be diluted enough by the air currents that even a deer would have trouble detecting it before it would detect the human stench anyway. I could be wrong but it makes perfect sense between my ears.

I use them routinely with the kids in houses. It really makes a difference for them when we finally get good cold weather.

Always love this conversation. Aldeer preaches scent control to the max until it's time to break the out buddy heater then it's you were gonna get busted anyhow so might as well stay warm. Now with the kids I understand.

I've never claimed to practice scent control. All I do is check the wind before i hunt
