Most people have to work well past 62 before they retire.

I probably won't live until 62, I surely couldn't imagine working that long.

Oh, and how did it work out that alabama used a bunch of its pension money to invest in properties in the state of AL (i remember that high-rise in mobile. talk about risky and shady at the same time.)

I have a friend that planned when she was in high school. Teach and retire in Alabama then moved across the line into Tennessee and retire there too. She only has a couple years left on her plan. Think she got in the admin side now though.

The RSA properties have been a very big boost for the retirement system.

A number of years ago, RSA made some bad investments. But, the hotels and golf courses have made a solid return.

I didn't really dig into the numbers. but it looks like they are only looking better in terms of valuation, not really income. So, I understand that we do the same with stocks and bonds, but those valuations are "accurate" due to the market liquidity.
I just find it too "central planning" and man does it open things up to corruption. Maybe there are still more blue dogs around than will admit it.

I didnt think so either. Movie sales were in decline last I heard and the money is now in producing shows.

My wife is a teacher. She has to be at work at 7AM. She leaves work at 530PM. Every day. She get two days of her choosing off during the year. A week at Christmas and a week in the Spring. She gets two months off during the summer, but has to spend 1-2 weeks of that in training. Then she spends another week or more of the summer preparing her classroom for the next year. I'm not even going to go into the phone calls at night from parents wanting to know why Johnny didn't make an A on his test even though a glance at his homework folder should tell you the answer. Anyone that thinks teaching is remotely a part-time job is ignorant of all the job entails. If you do the math you will find that teachers, even accounting for Summers and Holidays average working well over 40 hours a week. That is not part time. As for benefits, my wife has been a teacher for 27 or 28 years now and would like to retire, but the cost of the great PEEHIP insurance doesn't allow that. My retiree insurance from the City of Selma is much better and cheaper than PEEHIP.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

My ex was a public middle school teacher. in jefferson county. We were married while she was in college and for about 3 years after that while she was a teacher. I can assure anyone who thinks its a part time job it isnt. There was plenty she did at home every weeknight as far as grading papers, reading paper assignments, lesson planning etc.
Id say she spent on average 2 hours a weeknight on it. That doesnt count the phone calls from students, parents or other teachers. I have no idea what she makes now but i can tell you that the pay her first 3 years sucked so bad she took a weekend and summer job for us to make ends meet. The pay those first few years iirc just barely covered her student loans.

Everything in the military has changed in the last 25 years. Including the way they help pay for college, the amount of college you have to get to be promoted, and the retirement. On another note the national guard is the best deal going for a person to get college paid for.

Working until 62 is a little bit different when you are a fireman or PO.

It's so great now at tier #2 that are so many openings as they can't find people to fill positions. The Legislature is having to change it to something called tier 3 now. If you think you can retire on $25000 a year, go for it.

Bull shoot. RSA investments are sound but a private group that broke several pension systems they took over came in and did their own study. Of course it came out low as figures don't lie but liars can figure. RSA would do better but they invest in Alabama. The legislators are always trying their best to get ahold of that money so they can spend it. In 2008 everything was a bad investment. Who upgraded the State docks for Thyson-Crump? RSA money. Who bought a closed aluminum can facility in north Al and sold it to a company who now has the Budweiser can contract? RSA
