If your unit has green patches I'd highly suggest just sitting those for a youth hunt. We were in unit 8 last year and sat a green patch from noon til dark and probably saw 20 deer. Killed 3 all off the same field. This dry weather may squash that game plan though. I drove the road that separates unit 8 and 10 and 10 looked to be lots of really open pines at least on the north end.

Our green fields were pretty much bare dirt on the youth hunt last year but we set up where we could see up and down an interior road with a lot of crossings. Both girls killed a buck and a doe and one shot (didn't recover) a big pig.

I won’t be able to scout this weekend. I read where you can’t scout during your hunt days?

Did y’all have issues with not being able to go to your stand until 5?

The check station doesn't open until 5 and you have to get your daily permit from them to be legal to hunt. But we were always sitting there waiting at 4:55, got them, and took off quick as we could. Never got in the tree late.

I don’t think there are any rules that keep you from scouting you just can’t be driving on the roads at certain times. I think from 10-2 you can drive them. If you can’t make the scouting day the best thing to do is find a general area you’re interested in and walk in right at daylight. Look at a topo and find some bottoms. There are some beautiful woods there. You’ll see deer. We walked right up on a fine 8 point one morning and he somehow never heard us coming and this was with a 12 year old who sounded like a heard of elephants coming thru the woods. The deer there don’t seem to be skittish at all. I never saw any that looked nervous. You can probably contact the warden and get some info, at least what kind of condition the plots are in for your section. Just keep in mind some of the plots that are shown on the map don’t exist so it would be good to confirm before you put all your eggs in one basket.

We’ve always stayed at the best western in Jackson. But I think we’ll be camping at the check station on the SOA this go round.

I have a slot for he October hunt. Did you ask the manager to camp at the check station? I’m assuming there’s no bathroom.

I haven't asked him this year but there are people in tents and campers there every time that we've been. And yes, no bathroom other than the woods.

I haven't been on 2 but I will be on it in Dec with my cousin and her kids for the youth hunt. I've looked at it on the map a pretty good bit and it looks to be a nice section, lots of mature hardwoods. Ought to be wrapped up with deer.

We had unit 3 last year and the only thing i can really tell you as far as unit 2 is that plot 5 howell field wasn't a planted food plot. Might be different this year but that was the case last year.

Good to know, if the weathers been anything like it’s been up here I can’t imagine much will be growing on any of them.

yeah last year it was just tall grass. might be a good bedding area. not sure. we hunted a beautiful bottom our first morning. got in there late, probably 30-45 minutes after daybreak. they came in probably less than an hour later. tough drag uphill though...
