I bought a tank full of bad gas from the Walmart Murphy Gas Station in Mississippi Friday. Now it is setting at the dealership
because it will barely run and my gas mileage went from almost 25mpg to 13mpg.. I know its bad gas because I was the last
person to get gas before they shut all the pumps down and as of yesterday afternoon they still haven't got the pumps fixed..

I have filed a complaint with Murphy and I have a case number and the dealership is going to test the gas for me...Looks like they
are going to have to drop the tank, empty the gas, replace the fuel pump and clean the fuel lines to the tune of almost $1000..

When I was talking to a Murphy Rep they were already trying to weasel out of it and I wont have it...

My question to you alder gurus is what else do I need to do to make sure they are held responsible for this...

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

had this happen to me a few years ago, but worse. during a flash floods a tank broke and was flooded with water. I was on my way to hunt at 4am. I think 8 cars were affected and I was the only one that made it out of the parking lot. so, everybody else knew what was going on right away while I was stranded on a road about 2 miles away.

I also had the tank dropped and cleaned, replaced the fuel pump, cleaned fuel lines, and replaced plugs. By the time it was getting fixed I knew the station was paying, so I told the mechanic to replace the fuel pump (doesn't cost much more and they owed me something for my hassle).

I had no problem cause the station knew it was their issue and had to close for several days. Good luck to you. My non-legal advice is go in in person with your receipt and estimate from the dealership and talk to the manager. I would be surprised if they give you a hard time.

if the dealership hasn’t already emptied gas tank, make sure and get them a mason jar to put some in for proof of dirty gas for Murphy...hold back some, just in case the Murphy sample gets “lost” after give it to them, you have more.

oh, I forgot. the worst part was that the rain turned to freezing rain then sleet. I had one hell of a time getting back in the vehicle when I got back to meet the tow truck. So did my mechanic. Plus, no doubt, would have stuck a 150+ inch buck that morning...should have sued for a trip to Saskatchewan.

Make sure you have a receipt. Also, sometimes your car insurance comprehensive coverage will cover it so your payments don't go up. You would have to pay deductible, then they go after gas station. It would be better if the station payed, but I was just throwing another option out there for you.

I had this happen a few months ago with a McPherson Oil. One of the stations they supply fuel to had water in the tank. There were about 15 cars affected. Everyone made them aware of it. There were cars at the pumps that wouldn't start, people coming back with cars running like crap. They assured us that we would be taken care of and they did. They paid my towing and repairs no questions asked. They have insurance to handle this.

Take pics of it being shut down. I remember several years ago when the delivery driver put gas in the diesel tank at Dunn's in Grove Hill. Tell you what, they took care of the ones affected.

I bet that was an expensive fix for the trucks that thought they were getting diesel.

I liked Ol Dunns, hate Mr. Lee sold it, but don't blame him

File it on insurance assuming you have comp coverage and let the insurance company deal with it.

I opted for a higher deductible so by the time I paid the deductible I would still be in the hole...

Thanks for all the responses guys..

I can't believe it but Murphy admitted there was a mistake and they agreed to fix my vehicle and reimburse me for all the expenses I incurred...

It must have been pretty bad because they didn't even flinch when the bill totaled over $1800...

I can't believe the price these dealerships are charging for mechanic these days...Charge out rate of $110 per hour and $400 for spark plug replacement....

I work in engineering and the highest paid Professional Engineer I work with, his charge out rate isn't even that much...

Really? I had to use a structural engineer recently and his rate was higher than that.

It's not a common occurrence, but it's common for the station to reimburse expenses when it does happen. Like stated above, they do have insurance that covers these occurrences.

It takes a few days, though. What they have to do is go backwards through the chain of custody for the fuel. Every fuel terminal where trucks are loaded should ALWAYS catch a "retain" sample of the fuel loaded on each truck. When something like this happens, you pull the sample of fuel loaded on that particular truck, and test it. If it tests good, then the refinery/terminal are in the clear, and the problem narrows down to the jobber and the station. Most jobbers (although not all) do not store fuel...they simply move fuel, and if they're smart, they also catch retain samples of what they haul so that they're protected.

In my case it had rained over 5" and station sat in a hole. The tanks had gotten water in them. From what I understand they get complaints all the time ( people trying to something for free), but realize there is a issue when they start getting multiple complaints
