Yep. Last time I told my dad to shut up I was 13-14 years old and was promptly bitch slapped. Straightened my ass up quick. I had a 7-8th grade football coach at Collinsville that would do worse than that on a good day. He would pull us around by the face mask and cuss us up and down the field. Call us little fat asses and titty babies. Scared the chit out of us but we respected the hell outta that coach. I'm sure the coach wishes he would have waited to get the boy in the locker room to give him a proper beating. The video probably doesn't look as bad if it wasn't in slo mo.

A hard earned reputation can be blown in one moment of stupidity. The coach may be an overall good guy, but he threw that away on the field. It will prove to be one of the most costly decisions the coach ever made. It will cost him dearly in his work, community, and family life. I pray he owns his mistake and takes corrective action right away. Cotton Cordell used to say, "A broken reputation can be fixed, but the world will always keep its eye on the spot where the crack first appeared."

I wondered the same thing. The dad only made things worse by jumping the son in public like he did. If the kid mouthed off to his dad on the field, the dad should have benched the kid and dealt with it privately later.

The video loop is too short to determine the intent, with the exception of the push/shove/grab - which i can’t really make out which.

However, this is not going to bode well for their family.

If he really told his dad to shut up - especially in public - then the dad is also to blame for raising him such that the kid would ever even dream of doing that. The thought of telling my dad to shut would never even cross my mind, and I can’t imagine my own son doing that. Now the dad has to resort to reacting physically to control something he should have years ago.

Bad behavior on Dad and son. Hopefully both realize after cooling off.

Seen basically the same incident back in 1985. To this day son has never forgiven father they speak only at family gatherings.

The father was wrong to do that in public on the sideline. That isn’t the way you gain respect from your players. It is how you make them hate and fear you.

For those of you who think coach dad crossed the line, what do you feel would be the proper response if coach dads player son blatantly disrespects him in public and in front of his team?

Put him on the bench the rest of the game, suspend him for X number of games, then discipline him however else you feel necessary at home in private. I'm not here to side with the son, he was a disrespectful turd for telling his father to shut up in front of his team and the other coaches. I even understand why the coach reacted the way he did, and I can't say that I might have not reacted the same way. But as a grown man I'm firmly convicted that you've got to have better control over your emotions and anger.

For those of you that thinks it was no big deal, how would you feel if he had accidentally broken his neck? I’m betting no one would be siding with the coach. Prisons are full of good people that made split second, bad decisions. Still doesn’t excuse their actions. Most folks on here are only okay with it because it’s football. There seems to be a warped sense of thinking that somehow abusing a football team makes someone stronger or more of a man. Actually, it takes a much bigger man to show restraint and self control. Just a wild guess here but I’m betting the lack of respect shown on both parts is only a symptom of the real problem and not the actual problem.

There may have been circumstances brewing that caused this and had nothing to do with football. It could have been building up for a while. Obviously one or both of them bear responsibility but the coach/Dad screwed up big time with his action. If the kid deserved it, he deserved it in private and not on that sideline.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

40 years ago would the coach have lost his job?

I love the rut. The woods are like a bunch of roided up meatheads fighting over a girl.

The same as he would treat any other player. Also, my understanding is, he wasn't coaching the game, he was in the stands watching the game. So, he came out of the stands, went on the field and did this. He didn't allow his son's coach to handle what ever it was. Do you think that dad's should be leaving the stands and going on the field to discipline their children during games?

If that is in fact what happened, I have coached my son and sat in the stands and watched him. I would not have left the stands and gone on the field, if he did I believe the proper protocol would have been him being escorted out of the stadium. That cant be allowed for multiple reasons.

The game has changed. When I played ball 30+ years ago, that wouldn't have even raised eyebrows. The team was treated worse than that both physically and mentally on a consistent basis. Our only response was "yes sir". Not condoning the behavior but it is an illustration of how different the game has become.

We got physically disciplined in school when we acted up and if I had ever told my dad to shut up, in public or in private, I'd still be limping from the a$$ whoopin that would have ensued. A few years ago, I was seated on a jury for the trial of a man who was charged with felony child abuse because he spanked his kid with one of those plastic rods that you open the blinds with. Now, with those statements in mind, when I was a teenager we had guns in racks in our pickups at school and nobody ever threatened to use them on a human. We even had a smoking area at my high school. These days it is practically illegal to physically discipline a kid for bad behavior. Also these days, we hear over and over again about spoiled rotten kids taking a gun and murdering other kids indiscriminately because they got their feelings hurt about something. For generations, parents knew it was their responsibility to raise their kids to be responsible individuals. Now, this thing called political correctness comes along and we just can't figure out what is going wrong with so many kids.
