My power wire that goes to the front of the boat where my trolling motor plugs in gets very hot with constant running. I did upgrade trolling motors. Will I bigger wire fix this?

How big do you have to go? The last receptacle and plug i bought for my boat was 8 gauge and it took a little longer than the others to melt but it has still melted nonetheless. Should i run the biggest jumper cables i can find from the batteries to the front of the boat and use that? Sorry but I’ve almost posted this several times.

What size trolling motor and how long are the wires? The longer the wires, the bigger they need to be in order to carry the load. Normal 18-20’ will have anywhere from 4-8 gauge wire, depending on the size of the trolling motor.

I ran 4 AWG tinned copper when I refurbed my boat. When I fish below to dam, I’ll often run my trolling motor at 100% for a couple of hours or more. It’s never got hot. You can get the wire on Amazon really reasonable. I think I paid around $30 per wire for 25’. If you’re interested in it I’ll see if I can look back and find exactly what I got.

Did you just connect it to the plug outlet or get a better outlet too?

About the best deal I've ever found on tinned copper wire is through www.genuinedealz.com

Great prices, free shipping, and you can choose the connector you want and they'll professionally install it for you.

Have you tried Google?

I didn’t use a plug. I soldered the boat wires directly to the TM wires and covered with Grote (brand name) heat shrink. It is very good heat shrink. I also soldered copper battery connections (and heat shrink) to the cable ends at the battery.

EDIT: This is exactly what I used. I thought I used 4 but it’s 6. I have a 24 volt TM. If you’ve got a 12 volt I’d step up to 4 gauge. If you’ve got a 24 or 36 6 would be fine. I got one black and one red.

I looked at the link that hunterbuck posted. All I can go by is the picture it shows. The wire that I bought has a very high strand count like welding cable. The wire in his link shows a low strand count like stranded house wire. The more strands, the better it’s going to carry the amperage.

Before you go doing anything too drastic, make sure to check all of your connections to check if anything is loose...on both sides of the plugs, battery, etc.

Hallb beat me, could also be a low quality connector or a poor connection.
