I sold my UTV and built my own golf cart. I bought a cart from a Aldeer member. It already had a lift kit under it but it needed a lot of work. I replaced the motor with a 9 hp, new 500 amp controller, heavy gauge wires and a 400 amp solenoid and converted it to 48 volts. I added a bed a winch bumper and winch, headlights and converted it to positive traction. It will run 25 mph and climb a tree. I upgraded the battery meter but I’ve never had issues with running out of battery. I installed a new set of 8 volt Trojan batteries. They will easily last 5 years if properly maintained. It’s quiet as a church mouse. Gas anything is to much noise and stink.

I really love the idea of an electric cart, but while the club I'm in has pretty good roads, there's a lot of hills. I just haven't convinced myself yet that I'd be happy. Also, what kind of money are you talking about with all the upgrades you did (motor, controller, wiring, solenoid, etc)? Seems you can buy cheap lifted carts all day long around here, but I'd do so with the assumption all the above upgrades would need to be done.

The most important thing with batteries is making sure the water levels are correct and charging the batteries after EVERY use. I don’t care if you just went to the mailbox. You are correct most people throw a lift kit and back seat on a stock golf cart. You are asking for problems. Golf cart upgrades ain’t cheap. Your talking 500 for a motor another 700 for a controller, wires and solenoid. Positive Traction is 300. A lift kit and tires are 500 batteries are 800. It all adds up. It’s best to buy one that already has been upgraded. That said I’ve put my cart thru some ruff stuff it’s never let me down. I use a marine battery to run my winch and lights. It’s just easier than running it off the battery pack.

I suggest going to Buggies gone wild and start reading. There’s tons of information on that sight. This.. I upgraded my cart with a high torque motor, 600 amp controller, solenoid, switch and cables. Bought everything from a vendor on BGW and they had all the info you could ever need on carts..
