A good friend of my youngest boy told my son that he would like for me to go with him to purchase his own first rifle.
My son introduced him to hunting a few years ago and he has gone with other friends since. Killed his first deer last season
at one of his other friends property and has the fever now. I am thinking .270 or 30-06 but open for other suggestions.
His budget is $300 - $400

If I was looking to buy something new, in that price range, I'd look hard at a Ruger American in .308

Going to be hard to beat. Caliber is personal preference.

^^^This. I’d buy from Simmons in Bessemer.

In that price range, the Ruger American is a home run.

My personal preference would be 7mm-08, but the .308 would be a solid choice as well.

For what it's worth, Bud's Gun Shop has the Ruger American .308, with a Vortex Crossfire scope, for $502 with free shipping. That deal will be hard to beat on a new gun. If you can find the same gun used, you could likely get the gun AND scope in the price range in the original post.

I don't know how the 2 compare, in terms of ballistics (I think they're supposed to be pretty close?), but the .308 would probably be a little cheaper to shoot. My savage LOVES Federal Fusion .308. Academy sells them for $20/box. The Federal Fusions in 7-08 at Academy are $27....just something to consider.

If he can shoot a 06 or 270, then why the hell get a 308 or 7-08

Yep Ruger American. .270, .308, .243, 30-06, 7mm-08. Lots of good deer hunting calibers to choose from with that rifle.

If he's new to hunting/shooting, which it sounds like he is, he's a lot more likely to develop a flinch shooting something like a 30-06 than he is with a 308 or 7-08. And it's a LOT harder to break someone of a flinch than it is to not give them one to begin with.

And a 7-08/.308 can pretty much kill anything in NA just the same as a 270/30-06. With less recoil
