I currently work as a physical therapist assistant, but have a ceiling on how far I can progress both in leadership and income. I have been looking at going back and getting a master's in healthcare administration which would put me in position to progress myself as I get out of the physical therapy field. Does anyone work with this degree? Know what other jobs are available for it? Have family who are happy in this field? Any information would be good before I make a jump into another 2 years of grad school.

Are you willing to move? Being mobile opens the playing field big time. 100% If you're not willing to move, I'm not sure I'd fool with it. But if you are, you can apply for jobs nationally. The openings will be sporadic if you're only willing to look at a single hospital.

I am willing to move. Wondering other than CEO what type of positions would be available? Most “practice manager” positions ask for that degree. There are TONS of positions open in that field. Check Tenet website. Tenet owns the Baptist Hospitals plus others. The reason I know this is that my wife was hired to help with a new practice here in town and is in the loop on what positions they (Tenet) are hiring.

I am willing to move. Wondering other than CEO what type of positions would be available? Many. Will your current employer pay for it? I have a friend with said degree and is a Sr Program Manager at a hospital in Ohio. He told me upper management jobs opened up after he received his MHA degree from OSU.

You won't start off as a CEO, it will be as a department head flunky at worse or administrative VP at best. Long hours and weekends on call. Be prepared for a lot of stress. You will have to accept that in order to move up, you will have to move on. If you can't or won't play the political games you lose. Plan of moving every three to five years to go up the corporate ladder. Very few reach the top. All it takes is one bad decision and you get to go back to square one and start over again. Hell, this sounds like most jobs and just about every self employed person I know.
What you do today, you have to sleep with tonight.

Ttt. Found out from our director that this is a solid degree for moving up in healthcare, still want some opinions. If I don't go back to school and change careers, I will stay where I'm at but have to save save save and wait for inheritance ( which I hope is a long time) to really see some investing options open up. Realestate, land, stocks, ect. And I'm aware that all those investments are not garunteed.

My mother got her degree and then a graduate degree in AHA when she was in her late 40’s and early 50’s. She started out in some management capacity at Medical Center East and when she retired a couple of years ago she was the CEO over the entire St Vincent’s health organization in Alabama. I went to a doctors appointment with her last week in Birmingham and she was talking about the school. She said UAB had the top ranked program in the country. She would be glad to talk to you about it.

FurFlyin is right UAB does have a well respected program. Sound advice on the mobility. One of the ladies I work with, her son, is doing his internship now. He is from B'ham and did some time at Callahan Eye Hospital in admin......he is now at Oschner Health Systems in New Orleans.
Being mobile is an absolute. You have to chase the opportunity. The money will follow. It is very political and you have to play the game in that role. It can be extremely lucrative, and rewarding......just a matter of how bad you want it.

I have a bachelors degree in Healthcare Management. I found it difficult to find a decent job without having clinical experience. Since you've got clinical experience, that will help. But I'd be nervous about the overall direction of the healthcare industry with the government getting more and more involved

You know how the dems say that our healthcare is 2X the cost of any other country but we have worst outcomes? All that money is going to admin. It must be a good place to be.
I know a few high up. They've moved from one coast to the other. They may be making big bucks but are living in crap holes, in my opinion.
There are small groups looking for good talent all the time. But healthcare is a risky field these days. But people have been saying that for decades, so maybe just barge ahead.

ER Nurse I used to work with went back and did her MBA in health admin and is VP of physician services at a large Chattanooga hospital, makes a really good salary and enjoys her job somewhat. Any job in healthcare comes with good and bad so you trade off one thing for another. Overall though she is happy with the change.
Finally deported myself from the peoples republik of Kaliforkistan.
