I’ve gone out of Destin before with 5’ seas in the pass. It was very challenging trying to catch live bait that morning to say the least. Plus the majority of the folks got sea sick right then. Hell of a day it turned out to be for catching fish though.

2009 we left OB in 5-6’s one Am. A few guys got green real fast. We wound up 175 miles SW fished the Na Kika and Blind faith for 2 days. Maybe 1 footers the whole time we fished. Glad we pushed thru and got south cause to this day still the best tuna trip I’ve ever been on. Put a 115lb bigeye on the boat first night out.

Hell of a day it turned out to be for catching fish though. Coming back in through Destin Pass is the only time I've ever been scared on a boat. It was a rough day to say the least. We saw 5 waterspouts that day and the Capt. stayed strapped in on the bridge. Coast guard came on the VHF and said if you are under 40' and are out, to stay out, if your in, stay in. We were on a 42' boat and had already been out for 12 hours so we were going in come hell or high water. I'll think a little harder about that high water thing next time. The rest of the day didn't bother me but that pass was scary that afternoon.

I have heard several times by some Old Captains that the Destin Pass can be one of the most treacherous passes on the Gulf.....mainly due to being as shallow as it is....BIG boats bottom out....turn sideways and are just rolled over.

I saw a 23 foot center console flip back over front coming in at Destin pass one day. Pretty damn impressive to watch, no one hurt thank goodness.
