What is the law regarding concealed carry on college campuses? Specifically, are you allowed to have a gun in your truck if you are driving through or are parked on a university campus? I have heard it is illegal at UAT and community colleges, but what about Auburn?

I know all of the Aldeer lawyers will offer their expert legal advice, but I'm hoping doekiller will chime in with his opinion. 😀😀

I work at UA and no one other than LEO's can carry (concealed or open) on campus. UAPD has storage for students that wish to have firearms while living in dorms so students can still go to the range or hunt. As an employee I can keep mine in my truck as long as I have a concealled carry permit, I cannot take it out of my truck, but as long as it is in my locked vehicle it is ok.

I know what the law SHOULD be, but I don't know what it actually is. Probably an irrational dumb law if I had to guess.

I agree with this statement. But my job will require me to be on campus at times, and I want to avoid any legal entanglements. 😀 some of the guys at the office believe it is illegal to have a gun in your vehicle while on campus, but I'm not sure that is correct.

For students, they can kick you out. For non-students, it’s no different than a store with a no firearm sign.

They are wrong. There is no law preventing you from having a firearm in your vehicle on campus. There is no law that says you can’t conceal carry on campus.

Now, these rules are different if you are a student or you are an employee. As an employee, they can’t kelp you from having one in your vehicle, but like any employer, they can say you can’t carry while at work. Students agree to not possess a firearm in the dorms by living there.

(d) Except as provided in subsections (a)(5) and (a)(6), any firearm on the premises of any facility set forth in subsection (a)(1), or subsections (a)(4)-(6), or subsection (b) must be kept from ordinary observation and locked within a compartment or in the interior of the person's motor vehicle or in a compartment or container securely affixed to the motor vehicle.

Note: The University of Alabama is stating they do not fall under the new law and their firearms policy is still in effect. No Firearms on their property even in their parking lots/garages. Other Schools of Higher Education may also be enforcing their policies on No Firearms on their campus. Use Caution until this is decided by the AG or most likely by the courts.

That being said, I would still keep it in my car.

Heres what it says about schools. I talked to a county deputy frind of mine and a friend who works for the school board about it. The cop didnt really want to talk about it the boe guy said no guns at school. State law says its ok, federal law says no guns. Not sure about state run colleges but I would assume it would be about the same.

Federal law does not say no guns on school grounds. That is a long held myth. There was a law passed in the early 1990s that made it illegal. But, that law was declared unconstitutional. The new law that replaced it says it isn’t illegal if you have a permit and you do not have intent to do harm with the gun.

The University of Alabama can say it doesn’t apply to them, but their opinion carries no weight of law.

I imagine the rule is the same at AU as UA.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
