Perhaps burning it is better than watching it rot while eating up space.

Does Lee cut yalls hay?? I bought my feed hay this year from Bill Ousley until he was killed in a car wreck. I was paying $25/ bale and this was big bales. Dirt cheap. I bought several loads this past fall (old hay) for $5/bale for erosion control from a guy who was going to burn it if he couldn't get rid of it at $5.

My guess is left over hay that probably wasn't any good to start with.

Fur is on it, my cousin burned some old hay last week.

Hay has burned many barns. Several years ago my neighbor put some up , it started steaming . He pulled it out of the barn and spread the bales out in the pasture. The bales were actually hot to the touch.

There is one way to put out a cotton module as crazy as it sounds pour kerosene on it and it will smother the fire as long as it's burning in the module

That seems counterproductive.

I thought the same thing when I heard they put out oil fires in Kuwait with TNT

I have a guy I've trading eating shrimp for old bails to put in front of shooting houses for a screen. It's amazing what a couple hundred pounds of big ole shrimp dived out to right people every year will get you..

This...i saw 30-40 bales sitting in 2 ft water this year from last year cut if it was mine I'd burn it too

This wasn't spontaneous combustion. I've heard of that before. But the piles weren't there the day before. They both have barns, so I don't think it would have gotten wet. But I suppose it could have been old. But as long as it wasn't rotting, wouldn't the cows eat it anyway? I really know nothing about cows and not much about hay. I'm just curious.

One year old left over hay isn't too bad. Cows will eat it. If it's older than that though, it's usually not too good, IMO.

Most likely it's what I said earlier. It probably wasn't any good to start with. It could have been some junk they had to buy to make it through the winter. It's late enough in the year now that bermuda grass is growing well and there is no fear of having to feed hay.

They may be in exactly the same "hay shape" that we were finishing up the year. We baled a lot of green hay last year, due to all the rain. It was either bale it and let it mold or let it get rained on for multiple days and ruined. We fed the worst quality hay this year we've ever fed and it wasn't because it was poor quality grass, it's because of it being baled green. I will catch my dad gone sometime in the next month and burn everything we've got left. The cows would only eat about half of each bale, on the last stuff we fed.

That could be an aldeer classic story.
I think we need to hear about it from beginning to end. 👍

about 10 years ago, my family and my SIL" family was going to Cape Canaveral from dothan. It was probably 1-2 in the morning. My BIL was driving and i was riding shotgun, The women and kids were asleep in the minivan. We was in left lane and i was staring out the side window. A semi truck and trailer flew past us. It happened fast but i could of swore the hay bales he was carrying was on fire. The flames wasnt that big, but i said "DID YALL SEE THAT!?" my BIL asked "what" i said i think them hay bales were on fire. Seemed liked 20-30 minutes later we came to a long line of cars, and could see all kinds of police lights. Figured it was a wreck or something. After 20-30 minutes of go a few feet and stop, wait, go a few feet, stop. We passed that semi trailer on the side of the road and the firefighters trying to put it out. By the time we got there they had unloaded some of the bales with a fork lift. Dont know if it was spontanouse combustion or the driver flicked out cigarette butt. Guess he hauled butt to meet the fire fighters, then disconnected. Pretty carazy.

I was a heavy equipment operator for a small town about 25 years ago or so. One of my jobs was, about once a month, I’d take the backhoe to where the street department dumped the wood chips from grinding up trees and such. I’d spend a few days there turning all the piles to keep them from bursting into flames as they went through their heat. It amazed me at how hot that stuff would be when I’d dig into it good. Steam would poor out of it.

Just for you Outback

So me and two friends love fire.....and I mean we really like fire. I still do today. Behind our neighborhood was (notice the past tense) a abandoned horse pasture, barn and some woods. We made forts, played war, and had a good ole time in sunny Orlando FL. Then we decided to start making our lunches (hot dogs) and not wanting to walk all the way home. So we started small fires and grilled hot dogs. Then we had a great idea, let's see what we could burn. We quickly learned what burned well and what produced smoke. Smoke is bad, smoke causes the neighbors dad to run along the electric fence line to see what is going on. We did learn black moss burns fast, and grey moss created smoke. Rotting wood smokes too.

So our thirst for knowledge grew. We found all kinds of stuff to see burn and/or if it would ignite. One day I had the bright idea, I wondered if hair spray or deodorant was flammable. Much to our disappointment, the hair spray did not burn. I stole a big can ole of that stuff from my mom. But we did learn my dads spray deodorant would ignite like the sun. It was awesome. We torched everything. Trees, the electric pole fence, the ground, hay from hay bale right on the other side of the fence, palmetto branches (again we are in FL) nothing was safe. We started to make lunch, this time we started the fire in a rotten tree stump and was impressed we were able to get the stump to actually burn. Well the new kid threw a bunch of grey moss on the small fire, and that evil smoke started. Well as you can guess a dad came a running. We knew if we threw sand on the fire it would start smoking worse, but were desperate, so we threw sand. Our covert operation was spared, he did not see us but we could tell he was going into the woods in the opposite direction vs just running along the fence line.

So we quickly grabbed our crap and I did not want to get busted with the can so I threw in the tree stump. As we were gathering our stuff and 50 or so yards away running for home we heard BOOM!. You guessed it the can exploded. You know those certain songs you hear that take you to you past. Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire is one of those songs. The next thing you know the hay bales (note plural) was on fire. For those who never lived in FL palmetto branches are everywhere in the woods. Dead palmetto branches burn really fast too. So we didn’t even stop running.

Now we see smoke and a lot of it. Like we are fixing to be murdered by our parents smoke. In about 15 minutes the smoke is now like a fog on our street which backs up to the abandoned horse pasture. We hear sirens………….it a fire! Well the hay did burn, so did the barn, and about a acre of forest/pasture. Later that week, we learned they were fixing to clear the land to build a church and parking lot. We never another word about the fire and we learned never play with fire near your house.

Mom if you are reading this…….it wasn’t my fault - it was Sean Callahan’s fault. He should have never thrown that moss on the fire, which prompted the neighbor, which prompted me to ditch the can, and cause us to run. Here is a picture. The red arrow was my house.
