That is one helluva drop to not have guard rails.

This is in Bluff Park Section of Hoover where it turns into Homewood and Birmingham (odd city lines around here). Shades Crest Road runs right along the ridge of Shades Mountain. Shades Crest turns into West Oxmoor Rd at that intersection with Valley Street. It wouldn't take much to get bumped in that intersection to send you off the edge....or if you miss/forget to turn you'd run right off the cliff if coming into the intersection on Valley St. That's horrible. Put up a dang rail....never realized there wasn't one and I drive through there multiple times a week.

Would a rail stop a car? If it did, would it stop a vehicle slow enough to avoid a death from collision?

It should for the most part unless someone is hauling ass. The speed limit is 25 and Hoover patrol's it hard. There is always one sitting on the shades crest side of it.

I have a yard I treat within a mile of where this happened on the same side of the road. U can take 5 steps out if their driveway and there’s a MINIMUM 100’ drop. Some idiots I graduated with have repelled very very close to where it happened and there are sheer cliffs 200’+ up thru there.

Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers..........

Man that's crazy! I tell ya one drop that makes me nervous is the dirt rd in Gastonburg that leads to Peavys place, there's a little creek that u cross, and it's a big freaking drop, and it's usually covered by high grass. Well actually there's 2, one is further down the dirt rd, I go that way when i sometimes go to camp...

I heard on the news it was a young hispanic couple ( possibly Trox ) and they appeared to be arguing and he gunned it, through the red light and over the cliff. Appears to be intentional

Wonder if they had their green cards...😀

Ok, I know that was in poor taste but I couldn't resist the urge.

Lived here all my life and that’s the 2nd car to ever go over in that area in 40 years. The other went off about 10’. I hate to say, but according to eye witnesses it looks intentional and I believe them

Sad situation.

But ain’t no way it was Trox...ever...unless that cliff is between his house and his mailbox.

The drive on Hwy 25 from Leeds over the mountain to Sterret always made my skin crawl thinking about off one of those sides. They do have guard rails though.

Shades Mountain used to have some really wild and rugged woods with impressive rock formations. We used to play in those formations when we were kids. My uncle moved from there when they broke those formations up with dynamite to build new subdivisions behind his house.

I live down on the South Shades Crest end on the same side of the bluff. We have people run off the road between my house and the neighbors every once in a while. If the houses weren't here it would be about a 70' drop.

I've been told it was intentional, that she was raising hell at him. I'm guessing it literally drove him over the edge.

I live in bluff park not far from there. In high school we used to play on those bluffs and a good many people fell off.The guy that owns Johns auto service is a friend of mine and it happened right in front of his shop.He told me the car was coming up valley sreet and straight across the intersection.John told me all he heard was a car hauling butt then heard the engine rev real high but no skid marks and the driver never even tried to turn.Murder - suicide iis what happened. A girl I went to school with fell off the bluff and is paralyzed from the waste down.
