I have the opportunity to buy a 2000 Ford F-350 with the 7.3l power stroke diesel. It has 222,000 miles on it. New transmission about 40,000 miles ago. I know nothing about the 7.3 engine. If any of y’all have experience with this engine give me your thoughts on it. The mileage concerns me a bit but it is a diesel. Thanks for your input.

The engine is the most reliable Ford made. It isn’t a strong as other engines, but it is a close to bullet proof as you can get. I’ve never known anyone that had a issue with one. I had one for several years and wish I’d never sold it.

They have a reputation of being indestructible. Great reliability, less power than later engines.

Keep all the filters & fluids clean! Find a place near you that sells a high volume of diesel fuel and trade there. You might ask the owner if he’s ever changed the fuel filters inside the fuel tank. Few people ever do until they give them problems. They require pulling the tank to be changed.
Is the truck 4x4 ? They are a bit more upkeep but not much.
Look at PowerStroke Diesel site or any good diesel site to answer a lot of your questions.
Has or is the truck been “chipped “ or tuned ? If so, what tuner and how did the owner use it? Tuners aren’t nessessarly bad... if you run the right one and don’t go butt wild with the power side.
Does the truck have extra guages, or a monitor? If you plan on towing heavy you’ll need them.
All of the above comes from many years of running diesel pickups, many of them being Fords. There’s a 2003 sitting in my driveway now, unless someone stole it last night. Other folks ideas and thoughts & ideas on diesels might differ. Good luck and post up any questions you might have

This....I have a 2002 7.3l with ~220k. I recommend only using Ford parts too. If you are towing alot, you may want to upgrade the tranny cooler (do a search for 6.0 cooler in a 7.3)

Good motor. Never had any problems with mine. Just keep the fluids changed and it’ll last forever

Mine is an '01 with 315,000 on it. Put 2 water pumps, an alternator, and a radiator in it. Never had any problems with the motor itself.

Good motor. Had one several year ago and had 2 chips stacked on it with over 200k no issues other than a couple glow plugs.
