Seriously doubt the dog disengaged the safety, and pulled the trigger. Likely the safety was off already or defective, which is why you take extra caution with loaded guns. Bad deal but guns are dangerous and we should all remember it. I'll disagree with that. If you see what a lab will do with its feet, there is no doubt in my mind that this could happen, just as written. This happens every year somewhere. Always open those chambers.

Dang that's weird i hate it for the guy.

This is and has always been a major safety issue in a duck blind. Happens all the time or has been known to happen. Be safe and don't let a dog on the shooting porch or down in the pit with you keep it outside.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Duck blinds are extremely dangerous. Everyone has loaded guns propped on a slippery wall of a pit blind. I know that no one would ever admit that, but I think it's nuts.

I'm with Ticka. Dogs running around and stepping on everything could definitely step on the safety and have his paw in the trigger guard and fire the gun. Sad case that basic gun safety would have avoided. Glad he wasn't killed and hope his recovery is smooth as possible.

On another note, it seems like something similar happened last week to that poor woman in north Alabama. She was shot when a loaded gun discharged as it was either being put in or being removed from a vehicle. She didn't make it. People need to unload their guns when the hunt is over.

I know that no one would ever admit that, but I think it's nuts. pits are worse than above ground frame blinds about being slippery, but yes, they're all dangerous if you don't mind your p's and q's while guns are hot. always leave an empty or open chamber when you leave your gun behind in the blind, as there is a myriad of things to go wrong in that environment...especially when wet and muddy.

I had to take 4 guys back to the boat ramp a few years ago at Reelfoot that shot a hole in their boat at the waterline... They had the dog in the boat, pushing it up a ditch when the water was down, guns laying the bottom in case they needed to pass shoot one. Dog + Loaded Gun = Hole. Lucky it didn't kill one of them it shot hole through the bow at the waterline the gun was laying pointing forward.
Duck hunting is dangerous don't do anything stupid. People drown every year too.

Article I read said the gun was laying in the back of a pickup truck when it went off, not in the blind. Probably shouldn't have been loaded at that point to begin with, but sucks for the guy nonetheless.

Guy got shot by his bird dog a few yrs. ago around here. Just exactly the way you described. Thank goodness it was minor injury.

especially when wet and muddy.
so.....always...... at least of late, freezing hasn't been mixed with wet and muddy, unfortunately! insanity, aka nuts: doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different results....yep and every now and then the insanity breaks, ducks show up and work the spread the way they're supposed to!
