According to my calendar tomorrow will be a full moon. Do you think the rut in Madison and Jackson county will get going?
I hunt an area in eastern Madison county, close to Killingsworth cove.

The timing of the rut is based on genetics. It has almost nothing to do with how cold it is or the moon.

Whether its rut time or not, they do tend to move well when it's a full moon and cold. Sucks I'm at work...

You sure about that? I’m positive it’s photo period (amount of daylight) that determines the rut.

If that is the case, the rut would be the same time pretty much everywhere at our longitude. Not the case.

Photoperiodism is the deers ‘calendar’.

The date of the estrous period on that calendar is determined by genetics.

Read the entire article, not just the first paragraph. Check out "rut factors in the south" in that same article.

I think environmental factors such as temperature, etc affect how much visible rut activity occurs.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

No expert but deer rut (breed) when a doe is ready. Don’t care if it’s Nov or July. When bow season starts we have spotted fawns and little ones bout 30-40 lbs with no spots. Heck we still have spotted fawns I bet aren’t a month old. They say our rut is Feb. The biggest deer I’ve ever killed was with my bow on 10/30 chasing a doe. He was the 5th buck I saw runnin that doe and that’s in South Alabama. Do dogs only breed at a certain time of year? Pigs, rabbits, heck if that was the case we’d all have the same birthday. The only time I have seen a buck breed a doe was the last weekend of turkey season.
