So, a friend and I are starting the process of planning a public land hunt for early next season.
I would prefer to hear from people who have been to either.
We thought about early KS for muzzleloader or early season bow in IN.
Thoughts? Complaints? Any factors around this we should consider other than the drive?
We are really leaning to IN and trying to acquire permission to hunt from some locals while up there for later in the season.
Look forward to your thoughts.

Ive found Kansas archery tags in some areas pretty easy to draw, not sure about muzzleloader. They may be tougher.
Ive hunted both KS and IN, and Id choose KS but it is a longer dive for sure.
There is some nice public land in Indiana between i 65 and the town of Versailles, just off 65.
Kansas I saw some real nice bucks. Lots of land too.

I'm partial to Indiana. Been there. A lot of the people are nice. Some does are bigger than the mature bucks here in south bama. I can't take all the nonstop wind out west. Everytime I ever been out west the wind was howling the whole time.

From the little I've dabbled in Indiana I like it. I've never been to Kansas but my friend has a couple times and he said the wind sucks.
It is easier to fool a man than to convince him he has been fooled.

OutdoorObsession, you sure your talking about Versailles? it is not right off 65. It is off highway 50 about 50 minutes from 65. I know, I wasnt saying Versailes was close to RT 65...I said the state land there was. Heck, Versailles is close to Ohio. ( My buddy from Ohio leased it with me) But Id drive Rt 65 to Indiana and get off 65 onto RT 50 to drive to Versailles and there was State land there on the Route I took. I saw bigger deer there driving in then I saw on the farm I leased...lol. I just looked..it is called Muscatatuck National Wildlife refuge so its federal land, not state but Im pretty sure it allows hunting.

I live in Indiana. I would if you got private land go for it. Depending on the county. Deer on opening weekend of gun is interesting. Let me know if you have any questions?

Heck bud that is 5 minutes from my house. That Refuge got hit with EHD in 08; I remember driving through there and you just about couldnt breath because of the dead smell. Deer just standing in water dying. It was sad. It use to be a draw only hunt then. For bow and MZ. I have 5 on my wall from there all over 150. After the EHD it I would go out there and not see a deer. It is slowly making a come back. They care more about the water fowl than deer. They just started doing open hunts there couple years ago. I saw a stud there driving just before the gun opener following a doe that was over 150 for sure. I would imagine it had held some good ones.

I didnt hunt it. We just drove by it on the way to my leased farm. But we got a big laugh that the best deer we saw were there as we were driving in.
