Ideas on hunting a swampy area that's pretty open with alot of huge oaks I guess in it,not real sure what kind of trees but they look like oaks, anyways the grounds always swampy year around.Just around Winter time it can be walked in in certain areas.Ideas on best ways to hunt it,and how many people actually hunt in swampy areas ,or bogs?

We definitely have the ugliest, thickest woods known to man around these parts. Most places around here outside the Delta, you will be hard pressed to find an oak tree. Most swampy areas are made of bay trees, swamp Tupelo's, and red maple. Deer could care less about any of em. If I were you I would walk around the swamp, and find a good trail the deer are using to go around it. They don't like being in the open.

Adding to this conversation. Any thoughts on how to hunt blackbelt gumbo floodplain mock orange / cedar shelfs. If you look at pic you can see great at 3 feet. But dang the limbs with ANY ELEVATION. Im wet butting it down low. If somebody can pull up pic i'd appreciate.

I've been hunting swamps all my life. If hunting from a tree stand, find the driest spot in the area and put in a good food plot. My place is so wet I have to use a tiller. Second use a good rifle/bullet that will put them down on the spot, otherwise you could be crawling on your hands and knees looking for a blood trail. If my der run in forty or fifty yards in most directions, that's exactly what has happened. Opt for a bullet that exits for the occasional deer that does run, because trying to find specks of blood is near impossible to find in wet environments.

By choosing a good bullet that exits, you"ll be able to follow a good bloodtrail

Lockons set up on top of trails or ground blinds are you best bet. If you have time in the off season, get in there and cut you some shooting lanes where a couple of trails intersect. I hunt the same type terrain and those mock orange trees can be a challenge.

We have some swampy areas like you describe. Folks have been more successful hunting from either the ground or from a ladder stand hung well before the season. A millennium tree seat is both easy to set up and comfortable.

Find knolls in the middle of the swamp. That’s where big boy will bed cuz he can see you from a mile away

Study topics and look for high ground. During high water, it'll be an island if not a flood. Also, when we hunted the rivers, we looked for pennisulas. I'd usually climb a few hundred yards from the point. Saw lots of deer

I hunt a lot in the swamps. I like it and I think it’s pretty scenery. I enjoy watching wood ducks fly in on top of me early in the morning. I pretty consistently see deer wading/swimming through very deep water. I just put on duck hunting waders and wade out to a tree that offers some visibility(at my club thats no more than 50 yards). It’s also great to hunt swamps because you can hear them approaching from far away when they splash through the water.

In my experience they'll follow creeks picking up acorns, but a creek crossing is where I hunt. Especially one with steep banks. I have a couple of spots where I just use the top section of a ladder stand to hunt for visibility. It's a good option.

If you can see a long way, you are probably wasting your time(unless they are chasing).
Be prepared to get mad at trees with very large bases that get much smaller climbing.
If hunting the upper Delta, gate closes when Claiborne is at 21 feet(projected to creat at 43 this weekend).

Look for the high traffic areas. They should be easy to identify with all the mud. Just keep in mind that every track will most likely stay awhile , so a high traffic area in a swamp ( so long as it's not submerged ) looks like an Interstate not a highway.

That seems very dry and open compared to what I'm use to. I'd put up some lockons and trim shooting lanes. I don't see anything that requires special tactics.
