I don't know if that is the correct terminology, but I'm looking at different ideas for a counter top/coffee area in my youth space (think bar, I just can't say that grin) Anywho, I've seen cool ideas like this:

[Linked Image]

Is that something that is easy to find? Where can you get something like that? How much does that usually cost?
I realize it all depends on size, I think I would need one 10-15 feet long.

I have a friend with access to a saw mill that can cut the slabs out, but I would assume they need to be dried out or whatever which I also assume takes forever (years, maybe?)

I obviously know nothing about this kind of thing. I'm real good at building, but I'm lost on this.

Counter top with "live edge" is the terminology

I know a guy that cuts all kinds of decorative slabs for people, finding a 2" or 3" dry slab might be hard to find, and expensive. I know he has some beautiful dry deadhead logs, pricey.

I have a guy down here that cuts them and has a kiln. I can send you a number if you want. He puts some of them on Craigslist mobile area with pictures every once in a while. Some are high, some are reasonable, depends on the rarity and quality.

If I were you I would think about making a concrete top. Inexpensive if you do it yourself and you could use it as a youth project of some sort. All kinds of online info on those and very little tools or material needed.

We recently put in a kitchen island with a live-edge slab down one side. My wife designed it, we bought the wood, and had it put together by professionals. Some things I learned:
1. You need the slab to be thicker than 1 inch, because it will look better and be more stable.
2. The slab needs to have been thoroughly dried so it doesn't warp.
3. Be sure the slab isn't already warped--lay it out on a flat floor and see if all the edges touch.
4. You can see the grain, figure and color better if you dampen the surface.( It will look even better when the surface and edges are sanded.)
5. The price goes up as the slabs get longer or wider, and varies widely depending on species of wood and the availability.
6. Price also varies from source to source--it pays to check around. I

French toast with blueberries and Steen's cane syrup. Did something similar for Valentines breakfast. Here is a tip for you youngsters--do something really nice for her Valentine's breakfast--but do it at home. Cook her favorites, listen to your own mood music by the fire...etc. wink

I know a place in Homewood that sells some great live edge stuff. Let me know if you'd like to go, we can do lunch and check out their current inventory.
