I don't know if that is the correct terminology, but I'm looking at different ideas for a counter top/coffee area in my youth space (think bar, I just can't say that ) Anywho, I've seen cool ideas like this: Is that something that is easy to find? Where can you get something like that? How much does that usually cost? I realize it all depends on size, I think I would need one 10-15 feet long. I have a friend with access to a saw mill that can cut the slabs out, but I would assume they need to be dried out or whatever which I also assume takes forever (years, maybe?) I obviously know nothing about this kind of thing. I'm real good at building, but I'm lost on this.

Counter top with "live edge" is the terminology

We recently put in a kitchen island with a live-edge slab down one side. My wife designed it, we bought the wood, and had it put together by professionals. Some things I learned: 1. You need the slab to be thicker than 1 inch, because it will look better and be more stable. 2. The slab needs to have been thoroughly dried so it doesn't warp. 3. Be sure the slab isn't already warped--lay it out on a flat floor and see if all the edges touch. 4. You can see the grain, figure and color better if you dampen the surface.( It will look even better when the surface and edges are sanded.) 5. The price goes up as the slabs get longer or wider, and varies widely depending on species of wood and the availability. 6. Price also varies from source to source--it pays to check around. I

I know a place in Homewood that sells some great live edge stuff. Let me know if you'd like to go, we can do lunch and check out their current inventory.
