As a former baseball and basketball official, I think there is a possibilty they have been told to throw the flag more. Every year HS and NCAA upper crust officials and admins meet amongst themselves. Each time they come out with "points of emphasis".
In baseball it may be to loosen the strike zone or speed the game up. In basketball it may be touch fouls or illegal screens. in football it was targeting and then sideline warnings.
It is my belief after watching all the conferences this weekend that the point of emphasis this year is to simply throw the flag more times whether to slow the game down or whatever.

It is also my belief that the Big !0 crew..handpicked allstars by the way...were in way over their heads! SEC officials are the best in the country! Tom Ritter (ret.), Matt Austin, Baron Huber....there's more...all excellent crew chiefs!

More flags, more commercials. Follow the money

It's also the colleges and NCAA playing CYA with all this head injury CTE information coming out. NFL preseason was absolutely ridiculous at how many flags were thrown, and it's all about "protecting the players" which translates to don't sue the chit out of us please. It's only going to get worse too I'm afraid.

I think it's emphasis and early game poor execution. I will say the human element plays some role too.

Do they actually do anything anymore with the fans in mind?

Every first game is filled with flags. Nothing new. They are a little quicker on the targeting flag. More than half I saw were overturned but whatevs....

I believe a lot of conference officials have nurtured a "let the camera's sort it out" mentality. If in doubt throw the flag and we'll watch replay for a decision.

I believe this to be fact as well. I'd probably be the same way if I was an official. Can you imagine how some of them feel when every little decision of call is lambasted by fans on message boards to the point of doing frame by frame videos and sending them to the league offices? Or when coaches issue formal complaints about it week in and week out. Hell, Georgia fans are still crying over the officiating in the CFP Finals.

I don't have any issues with that, actually, I prefer it that way. Stopping the play only to have it reviewed to learn that the ref made the wrong call. Then the play can't advance.

My problem is with the plays that aren't reviewable. That seems crazy to me.
