North Alabama
I have 3 new properties to hunt this year. Have a lot of promising deer sign for bow season. This leads to my question. I have never really payed attention to what wind is most typical for north Alabama in the early part of bow season ( mid October) I’m trying to scope out the best areas for my bow hunting stands based on typical wind patterns near food sources and off travel corridors. What winds are most typical in mid to late October in north Alabama? Thanks.

You can dig in the national weather service website in Huntsville and look up past weather to find the conditions for any day you want to know. Search for multiple years. However, in hilly terrain up there, a NW wind recorded at a wide open meteorological site may not equate to a NW wind where you want to put up a stand. You will need to learn the land you are hunting. That is part of the game. Best of luck to you.

NW is the dominant direction of the wind during cold fronts which typically correlate to better hunting conditions.

A typical wind, in Alabama, changes direction every 3 to 5 seconds.

Just playing an odds game, we'll always be predominantly a West variant, but to me we get a tremendous amount of S / SE especially from Oct - Dec. Next would be just straight North.

We were on the edge of Eternia, when the power of Greyskull began to take hold.

Agree with ikillbux Typically we get a lot of S and E winds early in the season until mid december or so.

N, W, S, E, in that order. East is least is the old saying and it holds true as far as deer movement in my experience.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I set up every stand ( climber or permanent) to try and have wind in my face and sun at my back. I sleep in or catch up on chores on East wind, but that is just me.

On our place I believe it goes in a circle 90% of the time.

Ozonics, scent lok, hecs, scent killer, black and mild, and still will not tame the alabama wind currents

We had a ton of days with an east wind last year. I’d always have a couple set ups for that. Especially during bow season.

Just before a cold front,SE or South, when a cold front comes through, and this next phase is the best time for deer movement, a northwest wind will be the strongest wind then as the high pressure moves east, and the wind blowing clockwise around a high pressure, the wind will gradually turn north, then northeast, then east. After the east wind we usually will have another cold front on the way and the wind will change to the south then southwest until the next cold front brings another northwest wind. That is the cycle. Sometimes we have a cold front come through and the cycle ends with a south wind and brings unbearable heat and shuts down deer movement until the next front comes.

I've always had my best luck at sightings 2 days before a front, which is generally a S, SE wind and immediately after a front which is usually a N, W, NW wind. It has always been slow for me the day prior to a front for some reason, but the day before that, esp. the afternoons, I try to make sure I'm hunting.

Seems like we have a lot of south and east wind in the early season.doesnt really change to north and west until Dec/Jan when the noticeable cold fronts start rolling through.

If there's any hills and/or mountains involved, about the only predictable wind will be on top of the plateau or when a front is passing and it is howling. Wind is easy. Thermals and swirls are what you have to beat in hills and mountains and that is just about impossible . With years of observation one can get fairly good at predicting them , but will never master them.
