When is everyone looking to plant? What are some advantages/disadvantages of planting early vices later? (I've heard some reasoning that deer like plots early because of new growth)

Do you plant your brassica's same time as cereal grains and other seeds or plant later?

I've seen an exceptional amount of oaks loaded with acorns and most of the persimmons that I've come across are full of fruit on our property this season. In years past when I've seen such mast crops, our deer sightings on the plots have been lower during the early part of the season or until most native browse or other food sources have dwindled down. Anyone have similar observations?

NEVER before third week of September. If I were planting in LA it would be later than that.

We would normally do the second weekend in Sept., but would have been better off several times to just wait it out another 2-3 weeks

First or second week in October in LA depending on soil moisture and rain projections. We have planted as late as the first week in Nov. Army worms can kill you if you plant too early in Sept.

I don't plant until mid November. My lease is covered in Oak Trees and always get a good bit of acorns. I don't shoot does, and the big bucks are not going to a food plot in the day time until the rut. I have had much better success by waiting and planting later in the year.

I try to shoot for the second or third week of September weather depending. I like to have a couple weeks of it on the ground before bow season opens.

September is historically a very dry month.
We might get a few afternoon scattered showers but you can't depend on rain in September.
If you plant fall crops before October you're a bigger gambler than me.

September is too dry nd hot. If you get a rain it will be too hot around here. I always wait until the second week of October or later.

Mid to late October, try and get it young and tender for Thanksgiving. Arrny worms do not play.Last year I had about 4 acres of beans I had been getting great photos of every couple of weeks all summer. Beautiful chest high beans I had not actually seen since I planted them. Finally get up there early fall/late summer and something appears off about the field as I drive up.It was off because all there were left were the stems and veins of the leaves. It was a bit depressing. But they did thir job all summer.

Last week in September or first week of October for me in Florida Panhandle for fall food plots like full draw or green patch plus. Earlier or later than that has been nothing but trouble. One year I planted later in October and it never rained. Nothing came up. Early September too hot.

I'm in extreme South Alabama, and we usually plant between the middle of October and the middle of November. Northern and even central AL may not be able to wait that late, but there are several good reasons to wait as late as possible to plant, especially if you have a late January rut. First, there is a higher availability of other food sources in the earlier part of late fall /early winter (leftover ag crops such as peanuts, corn, soy beans and of course acorns if they make) and the deer won't need the food plots as much. Second, cereal grains such as oats/wheat/rye become less and less palatable to deer as they mature because they become fibrous and "stemmy" as they get older. Deer prefer it when it is young, tender and succulent. By the end of the season around here, I definitely see a difference in deer usage in the fields that were planted last (middle Nov) compared to the fields that were planted first (mid Oct), assuming your fertilizer and soil conditions are similar.
