I don’t know nearly as much as other people about guns on here. BUT I would go with something that ammo is readily available at gas stations. I’d go with a .243 or 25-06,
25-06 may not be easily found at gas stations tho.

.243 or .22-250
I like them both... .243 Hornady 58gr vmax Superformance = 3925 fps. That is flat skint back.
BUT you got to get the right twist barrel for that to probably shoot well. Appears based on reviews from Midway it does well in factory rifles which would surprise me but take it for what it's worth.

I’ve got a 22-250 in a M77 Varmint Target Model. Great accurate gun but weighs about 14 pounds. I have the same gun. And its definitely not made to be toted around the woods. Too heavy. I did buy a 22-250 barrel for my Encore for this reason. Track driver!

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

No but I don’t buy atypical cartridges that aren’t easily accessible in a pinch. I know a bunch of guys like wildcat or obscure cartridges. The ammo can be difficult to obtain if ammo is lost or forgotten at home. I have done it and I know most have done it once in their hunting career. There are PLENTY rounds out there that are mainstream and more than adequate. I just suggest getting a more common round. You may think it’s stupid but I think it’s wise. Ask the people trying to find WSM ammo how that’s worked out for them.

.22-250 or .243 either one. Personally I'd go .22-250

I'd pick .243 or dedicated .22-250 varmint rig. Far as finding ammo Dillon sells hundreds of die sets.

I haven’t seen a gas station around here sell ammo in 30 yrs. Kind of my thoughts also. I like oddball cartridges and it would never dawn on me that this would be a reason to pick a gun for hunting in Alabama. If I was going to Africa, it is a real possibility that your ammo could be lost, stolen, etc and I would want to take a rifle which is more common there.

I don’t care for oddball rounds. Neither one wrong. I have forgotten ammo at home and had to stop and get more or turn around. That’s my reasoning. It happens. To each their own. The OP can’t take it however he likes.
