What did you do for your floors? I'm thinking stained concrete, but would like to hear how expensive that is and other idea's.

Acid stained concrete. I did it myself. 2500 square feet cost about 800 dollars in material.

Carpet in bedrooms.
Hardwood, with 4mm vapor barriers, in other rooms except kitchen and bath.
Tile in kitchen and bath.

Coldtrail, how long have you lived in your slab house? Any cracking issues?

I know 3 or 4 people with stained concrete floors. They all look great for the most part, but every one of them cracked. One of them had lines cut in 2' squares through the kitchen, so that it almost looks like big tiles. looks cool. Also, on one of them, during construction a worker left a circular saw blade lawing on the concrete over a weekend (house was just framed). It came a rain shower over the weekend. The wet sawblade rusted and left a stain on the unfinished concrete. Even after staining, if you know where to look, you can still see the faint outline of a circular sawblade on their kitchen floor.

Walk into a warehouse with a concrete floor and decide if that's what you want under your feet every day. A builder in Birmingham thought it would be a good idea to build some high end homes in vestavia about 13 years ago with stained concrete floors. They didn't sell.

Listen to outback.

Au, if your talking about it being cold, that wont bother us, we wear flops winter/summer. I've seen some beautiful stained concrete floors. My cabin is not going to look like a warehouse, its gonna have knotty pine for ceiling and walls. We're not completely sold on it yet, that's why i'm asking. Staining concrete and stamping, also, hasn't been available for very long so that may be why some people haven't done it, and then there's the woman thing about wanting to change flooring every now and then. We're in our mid to upper 50's and my wife thank god, is not one of those that likes to change things. We may decide to go with vinyl, I don't know, but keep the idea's coming.

We did carpet squares in the kid's rooms. So when they puke grape juice I can just replace the square(s).

I wanted to do stain concrete but my builder suggested no because he couldn’t predict what they look like. Then I wanted carpet and wife and kids wanted vinyl plank. So we compromised and got vinyl plank.

It turned out really well.

We have LVP thru entire house including bathrooms except our master closet, media room and storm room.

My whole house is stained concrete. There are imperfections everywhere, it does not bother me or the wife. However, some people would hate it. I really like the floors, they are indestructible and very easy to keep clean.

Luxury vinyl plank throughout the whole house except bathrooms.Looks good and is completely water proof. I had wanted wood for years but with an old house we have had water on the floor several times and did not want to deal with ripping out floors if it happened again.Sure enough, last week a toilet flapper stuck and filled up the septic tank.Luckily caught it just as water started flowing out of the bathroom, but an small area of the LVP got soaoked. Only problem was the base board which I will have to replace.

One other thing to consider is sound. With rock hard surfaces everywhere, sound reverberates off the surfaces and can make conversations and listening to the tv difficult, especially if you're an ole half deaf coot like me.

And there will be cracks in the concrete. If you go this route, I would advise sawed control joints in the slab to reduce the random cracking.

I have stained concrete in my kitchen and living room. I have carpet in bedrooms and vinyl planks in master bath. I will be putting new flooring down in kitchen and living area. The concrete looks dirty all the time and it just doesn't appeal to me like I thought. I'm wanting to put hardwood down.

Carpet in bedrooms. Ceramic tile in bathrooms and laundry room. Laminates in the living, dining room, and kitchen.

Let me get this straight, people are building slab houses and the floors inside the houses are concrete? Not tile, carpet , floating hardwood but concrete?

It’s vinyl plank. It’s about 6-7” wide and 3 foot long. Looks just like wood. It’s glued individually

we use that same stuff in a commercial quality product in rentals and high traffic areas it holds up really well we have it down in our lobby for past 10 years and it has traffic all day long still looks good it just glues down like VCT they spread the glue and lay the planks like tile you really cant tell it is vinyl it looks just like wood. If i ever get around to it im putting it down thru our kitchen, den, dining and living rooms at the house.

If you want good looks, cheap, and durability, use this material. I think it could only be used effectively on a slab.

Stained concrete can look really nice if the guys doing it know what they are doing. It is also very hard to match a specific color or pattern that you pick out. They can get close but rarely is it exactly what you looked at and selected as a sample. Lastly, remember the most important thing about concrete....concrete is only guaranteed to do two things...get hard and crack. If you even remotely think that the cracks are going to bother you down the road, select another option.
