DR field and brush mower.
I think I want one. (Walk behind)
I have several locations where I need to keep the weeds bet down.
Does anybody have one and want to educate me.

I've used a similar machine that I rented at home depot. They will do the job well but I would not call it a walk behind. More like hang on while the machine drags you around.

I rented a different brand (billy goat outback?) last year to clear out an old grown up field. It was about an acre of 6-8 foot tall weeds, briars, pines. That thing never bogged down, but at only 24 inch cut, it took a long time and holding on to a vibrating Harley chopper dragging me around for several hours up and down a hill side wore me out. Better suited for clearing trails or really small patches than doing a whole field.

Not in the exact same class but my inlaws gave me a Craftsman walk behind trimmer and that thing powers through tall thick weeds, small trees, etc. Works to well in situations where I knock down the tall stuff and spray the heck out of them.

I've got a 12hp walk behind Swisher brush mower. I cut about four acres of woods twice a year with it. Its a handfull. When you hit a stump hole it will toss you like a mustang. It will beat you up. It can get hung up too. I'd just rent one. and let them deal with keeping it running. They take a beating. And so do you.

That is what I used. If you use it very long you feel like you've been in a fight when you're done. And lost.

I’d rent a tractor before I did that.

I rented one several years ago too. I used it to cut trails and shooting lanes thru a couple of clear cuts. It will eat saplings, but yes. It is a handful. After using one 8 hours you won't have any problem sleeping. It did do a great job.

I have tractors but need something more mobile. Have a old home place to cut around and a couple lake lots to try an keep clean.
Several years back I had a gravely with bush cutter so I kinda understand they are hard on operator.

I looked at one but didn't buy. Not that there was anything wrong with it. I just went a different route. What's nice is there are places that you can rent one to try. I think the website lists them. I'd rent one to try before buying.

I rented one once. Thing like to have worked me to death.
Where can you rent skid steer with bushhog head?

My dad has had one for over 15 years. We used it to initially cut trails to all the stands and then maintain them annually, It’s great for cutting smaller areas that are more difficult to do with the bush hog (like around the camp area or ditch at the house). It is definitely a beast though and will work you as much or more than you’re willing.

They are fantastic. I cut 5 acres with one regularly at Auburn. They will cut absolutely anything you are man enough to try. Dang near indestructible. Can not recommend them anymore. We used ours 2-3 times a week, 8 hours a day for a couple years. It ran like new after all that usage.

Also the Dr has different speeds. It can be as gentle or rough and fast as you want. You can run it with one hand. Ours had the 17.5 kohler motor and all you did was walk behind growing chest hair as that bad-boy ate.

Call around to the usual rental places. You can check with John Deere or Cat and see if they have a rental.
