How many here flip with heavy jigs? I never have but i recently picked up a few to maybe try here soon. Wondering if they have more success with jigs versus soft plastics, and maybe the pros and cons of a big jig.

1- to 2-ounce jigs, black/blue, big craw. May not get many bites with the big one but they'll typically be big bites.

The big jigs get old after awhile. I'd rather peg a big Beaver with a Tungsten weight, 4/0, and maybe a punch skirt, although I think the big jig sometimes can really get through the grass better. If I fished more regularly I'd probably have both rigged up.

I seem to have more success with flipppng soft plastic. For numbers of fish try plastics but for size go with jig all day. But with flipping you must lock in hands and flip all day once you catch one usually there is more around to be caught. Might catch 3 bass in 5 minuets then go 2 hours without a bite but that is flipping grass.

Years ago I fished with a guide down in Florida who said this, and we discussed it. Since then I've tried to think about what's around the area when I or a fishing partner have caught a big fish - big to me being 6+ pounds. I've also tried to look while sight fishing to see if big fish are closer together, loners, mix with smaller bass, etc., and they tend to be loners or somewhat together.

Guys I've fished with at Guntersville (or other grass lakes) also think the same and will have 2-3 rods rigged identically. They whack a big one and if they're in a tourney will try to quickly get it in the box, then pitch a bait in-near the same spot. Have done this with them before and we've caught multiple bass off the same spot, as rolltidehunter said, and then nada. Always good to have extra rods and rigs.

yeah if i catch one flipping, i u sually make several pitches in about a 3-4 yard span all around where i just caught that fish. And i have caught multiple really close together. i like when my friend misses one ( and the fish not get hooked) i flip in behind him and catch it.lol

I've caught a dozen or more(over 5) off one stump or brush pile in current many times. Current really stacks big fish. In current, I prefer a jig, plastic on docks and trash. Jigs on buck brush too.

At first I wasn't a fan of it bc I fish faster moving baits 99 percent of the time. It grew on me pretty quickly once I stuck my 1st fish doing it.

You can get that jig back in the cover quicker than re rigging a plastic.

But some times they just want the plastic for some reason or another.

I usually keep both rigged up and try and figure out what thy want.
