I'm amazed at the number of you that think this is Ok. This is the same mentality that contributes to higher taxes. You know when Gov't agencies must spend their budget so they can request more the next year. No matter if they really need it or not. I think the law needs changing but under it now 95% of people on this forum wouldnt turn it down however i say only 20% would buy a beach house the other 75% might do charitable things I'd have no problem with his actions if he used the money to do good. If he paid taxes on it, fine keep enough to offset his expenses, but $740,000.00 in personal gain from taxpayer money doesn't set well with me. That's more than the POTUS's yearly salary for an average county's Sheriff. That's not counting his sheriff's salary.

It was stuff than just a beach house, that and lawn care is all that's come out so far. Ain't no telling what else. He made an example out of the guy that first brought it to light though. Kinda makes you wonder why, if it's all on the up and up. "on the up and up" is a relative term. It is legal, but not ethical, in my opinion. Obviously some think that it is ethical if it is legal. The question we don't know is what is his salary? For many sheriffs it is the minimum allowed by law which is around 70K. The county commissions use the food money as an incentive for them to keep costs down. They know what the sheriffs do with the excess and they are OK with it because they know the other alternative is for them to handle it, which like someone already pointed out would cost more in the long run.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Don’t matter how any of us feel about it. It’s legal and the feds aren’t picking his bones clean about starving inmates.
Some slug lawn boy gets a gig mowing the mans lawn and he thinks he knows the right and wrong of the situation. So he drops a dime on the man. What did he think would happen sitting on some weed in that man’s jurisdiction. He pleads out and gets a slap on the wrist. If he’s learned his lesson he still had his left hand covering his buthole while he signed that plea agreement to drop the stretched felony rap with the right.
Stand up for your rights, defy abuses of power, make sure the system is running clean but your house better be in order when you start down that path. Otherwise you’re a fool pulling on that tiger’s tail.

So he is pulling in almost 350k a year or 175.00 an hr. if you want to break it down into a 40hr average.

Has anyone heard of this Jonathan Horton that's running against Entrekin in the upcoming election. Horton was intoxicated a few years ago and had a wreck in a County vehicle. Badly injured the girl he hit. Maybe someone can find the old article and post a link to that story as well.

The guy is unethical! Why didn't he give his Deputies a raise or bonus ! Instead the greedy SOB kept all of the money for himself! He is sorry and does not deserve to wear the badge!

Yup this is my thinking too. If he had given his deputies a nice Christmas bonus, donate to the local animal shelter, etc people likely wouldn't be nearly as pissed off. Not to mention it looks good for re-election. The idiot should have at least purchased the beach house under a shell company, he can't not think people would get upset. Pigs get fed, hogs get slaughtered.

The real story here is not that Sheriffs keep the money. The real story here ( that I’m sure the feds are going to investigate) is how the corn bread hell the Commission appropriated so much money to the feeding of inmates. It’s crooked as hell. In. Bibb county the sheriff gets less than 3 dollars a day per inmate and stresses like hell how he is gonna feed them. I think the law should be changed but not for the reasons you do. If the Sherrifs budget is short it comes OUT of his pocket. I have been county attorney for Bibb since 2003. I agree with the amount is crazy.

I think you guys are all missing an important issue. The money doesn’t go to the sheriff’s office. It goes to him personally. He personally pays taxes on it. Under the law it is his income. It is completely risotto say he should pay the deputies with it. The sheriff office budget doesn’t include this money. It isn’t the same one month to the next. Under the law it is his money!! Every sheriff in Alabama except Jefferson and I think Mobile get the same thing. Maybe the money is not as much, but the same process happens in every county. Jefferson and Mobile have special laws passed to have the money given back to the county. Until the law is changed, the man has done nothing wrong.

That money is for a specific purpose, not to pad his personal bank account! I hope he loses his re election bid! I guess he can't live on 93 grand a year.!
