Son is wanting to get a job on the rIgs. Anyone know if they are hiring and/or know the process to get on?

My friend had a job in texas but they didnt last long. Got paid very well but only lasted a few months. His buddy owned it. Moved his family to iran, texas. Not sure what happened but he said they ran outta work and moved back. Now the same guy is askin him to come back and they have plenty of work. Sounds like the same deal as the first rodeo. He said he saw a guy pretty much get his head knocked smooth off one day.

Crappy market right now, and definitely not the same industry I joined 20 years ago. Some companies are hiring, but as stated, very often it tends to be only a temporary job as some contracts are only 6 months or whatever. I work for a drilling company, not the same as an oil/gas company...an oil/gas company is who I'd try to get on with with the market and industry in the shape they're in right now; probably better odds of holding the job for longer than a few months. Still, offshore is a great place to lose a job, right now. with regards to employment, the market belongs to the employer, those of us still working are lucky to be, and they're already got 50 people lined up to take your job!

Not the answer you're looking for, I know, but...
The onshore oil industry is picking back up, and even booming in some places. Landrigs don't necessarily pay as much as comparable positions offshore, but they are somewhat more stable, right now.

The market is slow rite now but there are some companies hiring. Tell him to check on riigzone.com. A lot of companies post for applicants on this website when they have positions come open. More than likely for him it will be an entry level job as a roustabout, or as a third party contractor, unless he has a degree or trade. But, if he doesn’t, entry level is still a good paying job out here and with a little hard work he can move up quickly. Also, you have prolly heard horror stories of how things are or used to be offshore. Trust me, it’s not that way anymore. Safety has become a way of life for oil rigs in the gulf, as they are governed by federally regulated companies that make sure they operate safely. Is he wanting to work east or west GOM, land rigs,or overseas? If he doesn't mind land rigs, the Permian basin is booming right now and will be for years. Would mean moving to Texas or Arizona

My dad worked offshore for 30-years... he made great money back then and gave me all I wanted/needed too.

It was a good life, if you like being gone from your family for 15-years out of the thirty.

I know this may be a little out there but why not try to get on with a Railroad? The pay may not be as much as on a rig but I think it’s still good money. Good enough for me that I can support my family. Of course I’m kind of a simple man, I don’t need a lot of toys although I would love to have more. Lol

Tell him to look up Empire Scaffold on the coast in Louisiana and get on as a laborer with a scaffold building crew. They have a location down there that only services the oil rigs and those boys stay very busy. From what I understand, once he works his way up to carpenter, he'll make A LOT of money for what he's doing. It's hard work and not a job he will want to do at 50 but it may be a way to get his foot in the door.

I worked for Halliburton as an engineer 3 years ago and when the oil dropped, they shut our camp down...idk how it is now though...

Hard to get a job not knowing anyone out there. Drilling rigs are very hard work as well. It’s a different world out in the gulf or over seas. I’ve seen a lot of people try for years to get on with companies to make one hitch and drag up. His best bet might be to try and get on with a construction company that does contractor work out there.

My dad works for transocean as an electrician. He's been doing it for 20 years. 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off. Made a good living working 6 months of of the year.

Yea, thanks... He is a tough guy, he's a smart man but cannot take test what so ever. He worked at our local FD as a volunteer for. Year. He broke all kinds of records for the physical stuff, came test time...forget it. He was a pinner in the mines a few years ago, would like that again, so he is not afraid of hard, long work. Single so time is not a factor

I work offshore now. My son also wanted to and went through the 2 year production school . The problem is everyone wants at least 2 years of experience . Don't know how they are suppose to get experience if no one will hire them ? His best bet would be through contract companies like , Danos , Black Elk , Wood Group , Island , Quality !
