Did you check with furflyin Yep, check with fur, this guy has forgot more about bees than most people know. He will lead you right.

Yea he is a good one but like Kelly and so many others they just do not have any mated queens till late March. Mild weather during February really has our bees "blooming" and wanted to split before they swarmed. Now with next 6-8 days of lows in mid-30's will wait at least another week. Thanks for any/all information.

Never give up something that you love for a dollar. In the end, you may be wealthy but inside, you are broke.

Have you thought about splitting them and letting them make their own queens?
Yes Sir. When splitting I really like to add a new queen if possible. In our area we average only about 70% of our hives making their own queens and her being mated and returning “safely” to the hive. Also most of the time my splits are done mid to late March and with our flow and swarm season starting by then if I add a mated queen I get a 3 to 4 week head start. This year in SE Alabama February was so mild many trees, weeds, and flowers are blooming and several beekeepers in the area have already had hives swarm. With my hives just busting I was going to go ahead and do some splits this week – 5-11 March and let them make their own queen but now the temps are dipping down to lows of 33-38 for the next 7 days so I plan to wait till next week. Figure if they were to swarm they would have to make their own queen and though I can not completely stop swarms by dividing hives it does often help.
