That'll work great if you got 2 or 3 cows.
Not feasible when you got 300 cows.

So, you got 200 or 300 pregnant cows at one time you must have a large herd 2000 or 3000?

Yes. I saw it happen once when I lived in Troy. A friend of mine lived across the road from a pasture full of neglected Charlois cattle. There was 3 years worth of calves in the pasture. Inbreeding was not their worst enemy. We were out in his driveway, sitting around talking one afternoon, when one of the cows laid down to have a calf. The black vultures absolutely surrounded her. As soon as the calfs head popped out they got it's eyeballs. By the time the calf hit the ground, the vultures had pecked at her vulva to the point that she prolapsed. When she prolapsed they literally started eating her alive. When I saw them start pulling her intestines out, I had all I could take. I took my deer rifle out of the truck and shot the cow in the head.

No you don’t. You can have 200 pregnant cows out of 200 cows you own.

No that just means you cycle breed. Even if you didn't cycle breed and your cow herd calves 12 months a year, you should still have 90% of your cows pregnant at all times.

I've seen where buzzards pulled the rubber from around windshields and stripped off the wiper blades of multiple trucks on Upper Bear. They will also pick holes in the rubber roofs of campers on occasion. I sent APHIS an application and a picture that had 80+ black vultures in it and that was just the ones that didn't fly, a few MONTHS later we got a permit to shoot 7.

We had a flock attacking a new born calf. It lost an eye but survived.

Just for the record....

If we ever start having problems with vultures killing calves on our farm, a permit will be the last thing I am concerned with.

I've never seen, nor heard of Turkey Vultures killing calves but those dang Black Vultures are aggressive. Around these parts, we don't have near as many of those as we do Turkey Vultures. When I lived in east LA, there seemed to be 10 blacks per turkey.

I thought someone was talking about democrats here. Ole DW thought he knew everything about coyotes and cows period. Good cattlemen have 96% bred and the open ones on the way to the sale if they know their business. Hard to get 100% but can be done.

For the record Tigger. DW has probably forgotten more about cattle than most people know. We've been raising cattle since I was 7 years old and to my knowledge we have never lost a calf to a coyote either. Dogs yes, coyotes no. I don't doubt that coyotes will kill a calf, I've just never seen it. I have ridden up on a pack of dogs (my neighbors "pets") circling a cow that was calving. There were 7 dogs there. Before the week was over, my neighbor was pet-less.

For the record, my grandparents, parents and I have had cows most all my life. We have lost more to dogs than coyotes because back then there were no coyotes in my region. I have lost them in Shelby county and know cattlemen that have lost them in other counties to coyotes. I had a bigger problem with my goats being killed. Never lost any to buzzards but know of folks that have had problems. My reference to DW was really about his dairy experience.

In my experience most people will blame a coyote for killing their calf, when they have no clue what realy happened to it. They will even swear that a buzzard picked carcas was eaten by coyotes. I’m not saying coyotes will not kill calves, but it isn’t near as common as people like to think.

Totally agree.
Coyotes get the blame for killing everything from calves to chickens, when they're rarely the culprit.

Does a Buzzard eat a dead buzzard?

I was driving across a pasture one day years ago and a coyote came walking over a little hill close by. It had a newborn calf by the back and was going to the woods. The calf had it's head up and was looking around so I guarantee that some will kill a newborn calf.

It was just navigating for the coyote. Probably a female calf, giving directions.

You can get a permit. But most farmers ain't gonna tolerate anything killing cattle

And I wouldn't either!
