I sold a nice Savage .22 Hornet mid 70's because I knew the temptation to shoot a gobbler would arise.
I'd still like the chance to shoot a gobbler with a .40cal muzzleloading rifle like the old (real old) guys did....

One of those old South Carolina writers, not Rutledge, the other guy, wrote glowingly about what a fine all around weapon the .22 Hornet was and how it was a fine turkey gun. He also wrote about the motoring hunt, where you shot stuff from the car. It was a pretty good book. It made me want a .22 Hornet.

No thanks. I can adequately miss them with a shotgun. Don't need no extra challenge.

It wasn't that long ago in Alabama that it was still legal in Clarke county, maybe another one, in the Spring wasn't it?? Or am I making that up. rifles outlawed about 1970 across all of Alabama Trust Troy on this one. Charles Kelley woke up one morning and decided he would outlaw rifles for turkey hunting and that was that, and it was for the whole state and it was intended to be forever. You must be thinking about the fall season and the changes they've made to it.... You're right, I was definitely thinking about the Fall season, which is what I meant to type but Spring came out instead. Maybe it was that you could shoot a hen during that fall season? Heck, I can't remember, I never hunted it. I only remember it b/c we had a lease in Clarke county and one of the guys jabbering about how you could shoot turkey's out of the shooting house during the fall season.

I only hunt with shotgun because I have too That said, I would be perfectly happy if limited to only magnum rimfire or blackpowder only. My OCD brain does not like shooting still targets with a shotgun. It seems silly. I would rather use a rifle with a magical bullet that stops at 50 yards and drops harmlessly to the ground than use a shotgun. The handgun thing is likely my next venture in turkey hunting. I wish red dots were legal with a handgun but that for me is about more accurate shot placement with bad eyes than extended range.

Im not a great turkey hunter, but i wouldnt be half as good if i could have killed some with a rifle at 100 yrds. The challenge of getting them close is what makes it great and how I learned.

It ain't never been legal to kill a hen in AL, at least not in my lifetime. I guess anything was legal before game laws. I think it's been illegal all my life to shoot one from an elevated stand, so I would say that shooting house is in question. Is a house on a couple of bricks an elevated stand? Asking for a friend.
