He thinks? or He knows? Those are pretty easy to inspect. It likely is gone, but I would want to know 100%.
As far as brands, I recommend American Standard.

American standard or Bryant are good units, just make sure you use a good company to do the installation there are so many jack legs in the hvac biz. It is crazy...

They always want to sell you a new unit. In some cases that may be true, but a lot of time things can be fixed. It's hard to find an hvac guy that will fix something anymore though. that is probably true, but I would rather buy a new unit than patch up a 16 year old one. I imagine the cost savings from the new ones being much more efficient that it would pay for itself in a few years.

Well I've been doing HVAC work for 15 years. A 16 year old has system is very likely to have a defective chamber. But I use an inspection camera to ensure this. I also do side work. Wink wink. Just ask bowhunter84

I imagine the cost savings from the new ones being much more efficient that it would pay for itself in a few years. I used to have a home warranty. They would never replace a unit....ever. So I ditched the warranty and decided to keep patching the unit up every 6-12 months. A $500 bill once a year is way better to me than a new unit price tag. That unit was installed in 1990 and it was still going when we sold the house in 2016. Pretty crazy.
