Mine went in about a year ago green as a gourd. I didnt think he knew what he was getting into. He came out of it and other than him saying they tried to drown him he said it wasnt bad as long as you did what they said and kept your mouth shut.

I hope yours does well also. Letters from home really keep them going. He said some of the guys wouldnt get any mail , or only one every couple of weeks from home. Anything helps to keep their spirits up while there.

Our DI's called them:

Fat man's platoon
Skinny man's platoon.

I was a squad leader and got a meritorious promotion on graduation day, but the whole time I was on "The Rock" I was in possession of a double rations chit. I ate till I felt like I was going to puke, because I didn't want to get sent to the Skinny Man's platoon. grin

Nothing other than letters in basic.
Buddy I hunt with while his son was in basic son had evidently complained about the DI in his letters home.
The mom sent the son a valentines day box with goodies and a card. Wrote in the card dont share these goodies with the a hole DI. DI got the box when it showed up. Taped the card to the floor and every time the guy walked by it he had to drop and give 50 push ups. smile
They laugh about it now but the son sure caught heck for it while in there.

The near drowning was, for me, the worst part.
I'm an average swimmer at best, and they even sent me to remedial swim school.
The instructors were Seals and UDTs, who amused themselves by drowning and reviving me repeatedly.

That's what the neighbors usually say about some serial killer after he's caught.
"He was a quiet man, and seemed really nice".

I wanted to be a marine by age twelve. Had a subscription to Leatherneck magazine at age fourteen. But one month after high school I switched my enlistment to the Army. It had a lot to do with my fear of being at the bottom of the Ocean in a tube. It probably wouldn't happened but my immaturity convinced me it would.

When I was at basic training we had a guy in our platoon that didn't do his laundry over the weekend. And he didn't tell anybody or we would have loan him an olive drab tee. So at formation he wore a white tee shirt under his BDU jacket. While doing inspection the drill sergeant got to him and lost his chit! He started yelling and the veins were about to burst out of his neck! He got in Kelly's face and was bumping the brim of his DI cover into Kelly's forehead and said," God d@#*it son! What in the hell is you major malfunction this morning? Why are you f@$&ing with me private? Kelly then said " no I'am not drill sergeant! I forgot to do my laundry and didn't have a clean undershirt!" The drill sergeant then said, " son this ain't the mother f@$&in Marine Corp! We don't wear white tee shirts under our battle dress uniforms while running towards gun fire!

Kelly had to do about 20 push ups and 10 pull ups before got to go into the mess hall. lol

You son is in the best place he can be besides home. He will be fine and will be telling y'all similar stories that will last a lifetime but seemed like it only happened yesterday. God Bless him! flag

It'll be the longest 3 months of his life thus far, but the rewards and values instilled will carry him through the rest of his life. He'll do fine.

Boot Camp, is pure hell while you're there but so worth the experience and serving your country! He'll come home with more stories than he can tell in a life time grin
