Several weeks ago. Go to about 4:22, discussion about fall begins. https://www.facebook.com/OfficialDruryOutdoors/videos/1641137759262460/After watching this you'll learn he was not using a safety line and they had screw in steps in a scaley barked Hickory tree. Not too smart. A great argument for ladders instead of screw in steps. He said the screw in had been in the tree for years. I can tell you if you leave them in, the tree will cover them after a few years there is very little to step on. This was not his case tho. His tree had a wind fracture where the step was screwed in. I'm glad he wasn't hurt and it says a lot about these men. They came out and admitted their mistakes when they didn't need to. This may save someone else from the same fate or worse. HUNT SAFE

I dont think he got careless or anything. He had an accident...plain and simple. Do you all have a safety line on all stands? I try to have them on most but have 24 sets out. Most do have them,..but a couple dont. Loc ons scare me plain and simple. I hate climbers too. I prefer ladders but still have several loc ons and life lines, though Im phasing them out. Also Im real big on the 3 points of contact. Im a mountaineer. Thats one of the rules. A couple of the guys know I myself recently had 2 tree stand accidents in ONE YEAR. I just havent talked about it. One three yrs ago where I fell out and hung out on my safety harness. Had to cut myself out and fell around 17 ft through a cedar...luckily the branches slowed down my fall..but it sure felt like I broke my back when I hit the ground. I fell out the front, leaning to get my hat. Knocked the wind out of me bad. Took me ten minutes to get to my feet and over a year to even go to that tree again. I was hunting alone, and it was extremely sobering. Scary actually. Another one 3 years again ( same yr) in Il where I was setting a loc on stand in a tree and the aircraft cable snapped. Luckily I didnt fall. Id have been dead or crippled..nothing but stump and deadfalls under me. Only one cable snapped and Atlbravos yelled the cable snapped and I knew when I heard the sound. I dove to the seat and hugged the tree and kept my weight off the stand. He and his dad were mad, I didnt even have my harness hooked up. Scary stuff,..and since Ive been scared to death. Thats why you saw those ground blind kills this year. Ole Foldemup will tell you..I have some stands I hung that are so low he didnt know what to think. I just get afraid to go up too high. Most of my stands do have safety lines or transition lines...but a step ripping out of a tree.. Thats just bad luck. Glad he is OK. If you notice the statement about letting someone know where you are Terry said..I do that every set I sit. Im scared now to be honest in a tree. Even in a ladder. Strapped in and paying closer attention.

Yes,it was a freak thing to happen with there being a stress fracture in the tree. But that is the very reason why you ALWAYS are strapped into your harness either with a safety line or tree strap. I am so glad he lived to tell his story.

I have used Loc-ons prolly 80% of my tree stand hunting times. I used those damn screw in steps ONCE and never used them again, they are an accident waiting on the right opp to break/pull out. Alum climbing sticks are the way to go.
I always use a safety line/Prussic knot/harness set up. I have never fallen, or really even come close to falling. I am way to damn old to hit the ground hard from 18 feet up.
Actually ladder stands scare me more than Loc-ons. I have had a couple of metal ones that I got out of because they didn't feet secure enough. Usually someone elses stand set up.
When I started bow hunting in the mid 60s just about EVERYBODY I knew fell out of a tree. Crappy homemade stands, no safety line. Only saving grace was that most folks then didn't get but 10-12 feet off the ground.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

King, a friend of mine had a stand like that. He was standing just looking around and the leg underneath just broke, dropping him like a trap door!!!!

Hitting the ground back first from 15’ up sucks.

FRED, and if you did not get the correct angle on the stand it would kick out from the tree, and it would drop you out like a trap door, and no one had come up with safety vest like we have now, we just put a rope around our waist and tied it to the tree, and if your top was heaver than your bottom, you know what was going to happen, your but was pointed up and your head was pointed down, not a good way to spend the day!!
