Negro moss
Extremely invasive species I think I just woke my wife up laughing. Which is probably better than me waking her up, and her start laughing.

Horse tail hair? Any tracks? None. I thought that at first but I found smaller amounts in a place where there was no way a horse was getting back to.

Black cow tail hair is my best guess. I've seen it numerous times and that's what I've always figured it to be. Send some in for DNA testing.
And for the record a 1100 lb cow will get in places that you wouldn't think a rat should be able to get to.
