Bass Pro policy is not to call officers/PD unless the theft is over $500 which would make it a felony or unless the offender resists or threatens violence.

Either they wanted to make an example of him because he was in uniform, he resisted or threatened violence, or this wasn't the first time they had him on camera stealing.

My bet is he resisted and/or got belligerent and that's why PD was called.

Store manager might have been harassed by him in the past and he was paying him back.

Yep, GW in 2003. My memory sucks! I don't think he could have retired from MPD. He would have to hire in in 1983 or earlier. Had to be 21 yo at least to get hired. But, as I said my memory sucks.

Exactly. I remember the Douglas Police Chief getting fired many years ago, because he stopped and bought a case of beer in uniform while he was headed home.

He was still at the MPD as of, at least, the 98-2000 time frame.

Until a couple of years ago I think Montgomery officers could retire with 20 years of service. They were on their own retirement system and not under RSA. They are now under RSA.

If there is convincing evidence against him, and he isn't close to retirement, which apparently he isn't, they will most likely fire him. He will just get a lump sum payment from RSA of what he put into it since becoming a state employee, or he can freeze it for up to 6 months and get another RSA covered job to get the rest of his time in for RSA retirementwhich should be in 2028 or so.

Or if he has more than 10 years in with RSA, he can freeze it until he reaches a certain age (62 I think) and draw a smaller than normal pension. I believe that is how that works. I bet he is checking on all that today.

The more I think about it, if you are fired they just give you your RSA contributions back and RSA is done with you unless you have 25 years in before you committed the act that got you fired.

Yep, that's Hasty. Retired from MPD about 15 yrs ago and got on with G&F.

He was accused years ago of stealing from a well known gun store, but was never proven. This would have been back in the mid 90's.

With history of accumulated crap, it sounds like he needs to be in prison.

I hope he gets all the punishment the law will allow if he is convicted of his crime.

Just because he is a LEO doesn't make him any better than any of us regular folks.

Talked to a mutual friend today. Hasty was actually a security consultant when Bass Pro was being built. I remember t he other story now, he stole a friend's game cameras.

The fact is this is not common, but not totally unusual for LEOs and there are psychological and physiological reason for it. The fact is many LEOs are in that line of work because they are adrenaline junkies. They crave, mentally and physically the rush of excitement. For many the excitement from the job satisfies them in this regard. For others they have to seek excitement outside of work. This is why LEOs have a higher than normal rate of cheating in marriages, they are prone to gambling problems and many, like is probably the case here, find excitement in shoplifting relatively minor items.

In no way should that be viewed as an excuse. In fact he has been trained on the very thing I stated above and trained on how to cope with it. He knew what he was doing was illegal and wrong and he knew the potential consequences. If he's guilty make him pay for his crime.
