Probably as it is a business for some, and the advertisement of said business, cost money?

Some people may have a fee to cover some of the expense of running up and down the roads but no one is doing it as a legitimate business. We figured it up one day at a convention and someone would have to charge somewhere in the neighborhood $300 per track to even cover costs…..$50 here and $100 there just helps feed the dogs and put gas in the tank...... and the wife off our arse for spending so much money on dogs!!

I spoke with a man on facebook that tracks the other that he is definitely in the business. His charges are $100-$150 just to come out and $150 if he locates and recovers the deer. I understand covering the gas and time and that it takes a ton of patience and time to train the dogs but $300 per track is a little much in my opinion.

In fact, I wouldn't pull the trigger on a deer if I wasn't willing to put some serious effort, time, and money into finding it.

Aww yeah, that’s just 37.50 per hour if it takes 8 hours to find the deer. Screw that
Yeah c’mon. Daniel White

I agree that a good tracker and recovering a trophy would be priceless. I haven’t been in that situation as of yet. I have lost deer in the past and have become a lot more selective with my shots then I used to be. One of the deer I lost in the past I would have paid for a tracker without a doubt and I spent a lot of time and effort trying to find that buck with no luck. When I talked to the man it just kinda sticker shock on the way he had priced.

I’ll give you that it’s the most I’ve heard of anyone charging in our area……To be fair though to whoever it may be……they still ain’t making a living at that rate or anything…..If you figure up the true cost of everything it takes to be able to track for the public then it really adds up. All the food, vet bills, thousand dollar tracking collars, miles of traveling, etc, etc..….
Also consider that a good tracking dog is very valuable $$$ and there’s not that many of them. A finished tracking dog from a good blood line could bring $3,000 or more. I’ve seen a few of them sell for that now. So let’s say I bring two finished tracking dogs out to find your deer that are both equipped with garmin tracking collars…..That’s $7,000 worth of dog and collar that’s going out to find your deer.
Still though, I get where you’re coming from and that’s why tracking will never be a true business. If someone charged what it would take to make a profit then it would scare most folks to death when you gave them a price. Like I was saying, most folks are just charging a little bit to help cover the costs of running up and down the roads.
I’ve also found that charging a little fee helps separate out some of the calls. You’ll read in the tracking books about “how to screen calls” and decide which ones to take and which ones not to take based on if you think the deer is recoverable. I don’t do all that…..I let the hunter decide. A high back shot would be a good example. Most trackers know your likely not gonna find that deer but most hunters don’t want to hear that. I’m not gonna leave someone hanging though if they want their deer searched for just because I don’t believe it will be recovered. If it’s worth it to them to pay the fee to come out and search….then I’m on the way. That just makes it simpler in my mind.
