ANOTHER Navy ship collides with a merchant ship in the Pacific. Don't they have millions of dollars worth of electronics to prevent this?

US Navy destroyer and merchant ship collide near Singapore

SINGAPORE (AP) A U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer has collided with a merchant ship in waters east of Singapore and the Straits of Malacca.

The Navys 7th Fleet says that the USS John S. McCain sustained damage on its port side from the collision with the Alnic MC on Monday at 5:24 a.m.

Search and rescue efforts were underway in coordination with local authorities. There were no initial reports of injuries.

It is the second collision involving a Navy ship in the Pacific in two months. Seven sailors died in June when the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship hit each other in waters off Japan.

The Japan-based 7th fleet said the McCain was heading to Singapore for a routine port visit.

Inform me if I'm missing something. Prayers sent for the missing and injured. But how in the hell does this happen with today's technology. I realize the area is crowded with ships probably. Someone needs get their ass behind the wheel and turn off autopilot or something. This is ridiculous.

They have an autonomous mini-ship to track subs. That's the problem , they haven't got figured out how to keep it out of wrecks.

Do captains get in trouble when something like this happens? I'm guessing they could and that there's an intensive investigation.

Throw the sumbitch in reverse!

It blows my mind that with all eyes on deck, coming into a port, that nobody was like "hey, there's a boat!"

I've always been of the camp that thought you're lucky to get within 200 yards of a naval ship.

Crowded is a major understatement. One of the busiest traffic schemes I have been in. I did not visit the Med or the Red Sea. Those have some rough spots also.
A quick look at the damage I would guess the DDG had the right of way but the caveat of everyone is suppose to avoid a collision will cost the CO his job probably.

With all the electronics and the sheer size you
Would think they just could not hit each other in
open water,,,dockside I could see it happening.

I think the problem is that the Navy thinks it has the
right-of-way all the time.

Same here. It happening one time is a mishap, happening twice in a couple months shows there is a REAL problem.

The last collision was the Fitzgerald, which was the sister ship of the McCain. Seems odd that it was the same class guided missile destroyer this time. The Senior Staff of the Fitzgerald lost that command (not fired from the Navy, but fired from running that ship).

I can not figure out how this keeps happening, I know they have all kinds of radar and collision avoidance stuff on these ships, not to mention all the people on watch, I know there is a ton of shipping where this happened and is not on the open ocean but still.....

I think that's part of the problem.....they've started relying too much on all the gadgets and technology....someone needs to get off their azz and drive the damn boat.
