I recently got the huntstand app on my phone and on their website. It lets you put in weather, moon, and other stuff for all of your harvests. I had never really paid much attention to the moon phase before-just the weather. It showed that about 40% of my buck harvests were with a new moon, and 40% were with a full moon. The rest were in between. They were all early morning or evening. I've always heard full moons aren't good for movement, so I didn't hunt them as much as other phases, but they still made up almost half of my harvests. This was the same for both of the places I hunt: almost the exact same percentages.

My question is this: Should I start hunting more full moon days, or is this just a coincidence? Do any of y'all have hard numbers like this you could share?

Thanks

You'd probably have more distinct answers to asking: what's better, 9mm or .45, chevy or ford, red head or blonde. (9mm, Ford, Red head are the correct answers, in case you were wondering. ;-) )
There have been many studies done on the subject. This one says the moon has little to no effect on their movements, however I cannot find the research associated: http://ecosystems.psu.edu/research/projects/deer/news/2017/wandering-in-the-moonlight

Here is the data and discussion from students at Auburn/LSU on the subject: http://www.rnr.lsu.edu/bret/BretWebSiteDocs/Sullivan2016.pdf

they state:
Quote:
Although we detected relationships between solunar events and
white-tailed deer activity, there are problems with the manner in
which solunar charts express the relationship between deer activity,
solunar events, and moon phase. A primary concern with solunar
charts is found in the conflicting relationships with moon phase
between solunar events. The existence of these conflicting trends
suggests that the day ranking system currently used by solunar
chart producers is not an effective predictor of deer activity, as it
only correctly identifies peak periods of activity for moon RISE
and moon SET. In contrast, peak periods of activity associated
with moon OVERHEAD and moon UNDERFOOT are not wellpredicted
by day rank. As a result, solunar charts will have a natural
tendency to accurately predict periods of activity only half the time.
A second, but perhaps less fundamental issue with solunar charts is
that classifying moon RISE and moon SET as minor periods while
classifying moon OVERHEAD and moon UNDERFOOT as major
periods is misleading. The greatest probabilities of activity for
moon RISE and moon SET, which occurred on days closest to the
new and full moon, were actually greater than the peak values for
moon OVERHEAD and moon UNDERFOOT, which occurred on
days furthest from the new and full moon. These differences suggest
that solunar chart developers need to reconsider their use of
day rankings.

http://www.sedsg.com/index.asp is a great resource for scientifically based data. You can search abstracts for "moon" and then copy and paste the titles to find the actual paper/data on the subject.

In short:
Best bet will be to hunt the Mornings and the Evenings. Sometimes deer are stupid (or smart) and move during the middle of the day. Unfortunately my available time to hunt cannot be associated with moon phase. I'll go when I can go.

I have had alot of success with the huntstand app. Going by the moon phases and feeding times have been around 10 or 25 minutes before or after the said times on the app. May be just pure coincidence but it seems to work for me

ive always heard that a full moon is good for a mid day sit.. the way it was explained to me, is that the deer would feed more through the night, therefore be bedded down during the first light.. deer have to move for digestion and since they bed earlier on a full moon, they will be up mid day to feed.

I don't plan my hunt by the moon phase, but figure it in with all the other variables.. temp, weather, time of year

There is truth to the deer moving later in the morning during the full moon.

Like you, I never planned a hunt around the moon phase, but if it was extremely cold and the moon was full, I didn't even get to a stand until about 9:30 or so. The temp was as big a factor or more for me in this situation. I'd do this on extremely cold days no matter what the moon was doing. I always saw deer too.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I just enjoy being in the woods early but I do agree that on that blistering cold mornings, the deer will move mid morning once the frost has melted.. paired with a full moon and mid day sit can be some dang good hunting.

I always try and get in some mid day hunts during the full moon, those hunts have been good to me over the years, producing a high percentage of kills.

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Mid- day on high pressured places is also a pretty good bet. I have killed some good bucks on a full moon at first light the following morning also. Caught them going back to bed. I use to get caught up in following phases and trying to hunt by the calendar when i was younger. While I do believe there is something to it just going when you can is your best bet. You never know whats going to step out when.
