Alright, I guess I'm gonna have to move into the 21st Century. For the last 10 years I haven't had to worry about any internet service because I either used the stuff that was in my office set up by someone else, used my phone, or used my phone as a hotspot.
I just moved into a new place and the cable provider sucks so I'm going with hi speed internet (20mbps) and going to use Sling and maybe Netflix. I have an older (5 years old) Toshiba that was my main TV that I'm going to move to the bedroom. It isn't a smart TV so I'm assuming I'll need a streaming device for it , correct? Which one should I get? Something simple and cheap , preferably.
I just bought a new Vizio Smart TV that will be my main TV but I'm not positive if it has a Sling app as it hasn't been delivered yet. If it doesn't have a Sling App will I need another streaming device for that TV, too?
The last part of the equation is a wifi Router. If I want to run both Tv's off hi speed , I need a wireless router, correct? What is the benefit of a dual band router and do I need one? Help me understand what I need to make this whole thing work.

Single channel routers run only on 2.4GHz and often suffer from interference from other devices. In theory running a dual band (2.4 and 5 GHz), gives you more bandwidth - a bigger pipe, so to speak - and it offers the benefit of diversity which can overcome interference.
What will you be using network for, exactly? PM me if need be. If you live away from folks versus say living in an apartment complex, you might be alright with a single channel router. I'd go dual band...
If you are only interested in using it for access to Sling, then you don't require a dual router necessarily, nor do you need 20Mbps service. But that might keep you from buffering so much.
Personally I'm paying for 80Mbps down and 10 up. Most of the time my service is more like 120 up and 25 down. At times, I experience issues with my data rates - we sometimes have 4 of us streaming video content and more. The experience is normally great but when users on my branch access it at the same time (think neighborhood coming home from work) I can experience much lower data rates.
From the web, here are the devices to use in order to get Sling services on a TV: Roku (TVs, boxes and streaming stick), Apple TV (2015 only), Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Xbox One, Android TV, Channel Master
If it were me, I'd grab a dual band router and a Roku for the Toshiba and maybe another Roku for the Vizio - but I'd bet that's a smart TV.
Hell man I'm dranking so I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore. Let me know if I can help.

I'm only needing it to stream on 2 Tv's. The Vizio IS a smart TV. Do I still need a Roku to get Sling on it? I'd rather buy a little more than I need so I'll take your advice and get a dual band router.

Bill - as already stated, the 5GHz supports more channels, which should help with co-channel interference related issues - assuming your devices support 5GHz. Unless you want a drawn out explanation of band steering, the client will determine the radio. Unless you are near an airport, military facility, or Dopler - use the DFS channels on the 5GHz and 20MHz sub channels. Other than that - given that most of your traffic is going to be North Bound - the limiting factor will be your Internet Service Provider.

Bill - are you getting the high-speed from your cable provider? It's not satellite, right? As far as wireless routers - most likely anything you would go into best buy or even wal-mart and get is going to be fine nowadays - but yes, you will need one to get the TV and the Roku or whatever devices you go with connected. I wouldn't get too caught up in all the tech mumbo jumbo, but below is a link about the dual band stuff. http://www.netgear.com/landing/dual-band.aspxFor the TV's, if you want to have the most options available on both of them, then get a roku or similar device for each of them - there's a bunch of options out there - amazon fire tv, chromecast, etc. The "smart" TV's can be limiting in their options and the interface not as user friendly as something like a roku. https://www.geek.com/tech/roku-stick-vs-google-chromecast-tiny-tv-titans-1586865/

Not sure if it is still this way, but I think you can only do sling on one tv at a time.
Sometimes sling will run a deal with roku that if you pay 3 mos in advance then they will send you a free roku.
The better the speed on your internet and router the less trouble you will have.
When watching big games sling will tend to come and go. I don't think it is as much the internet as much as it is sling service can't keep up with the numbers. I solved that by using my sling login with the watch espn app and it worked better but not flawlessly.
Good Luck.

My internet provider said I'll need a Wireless router if ii want Wifi. They will sell me one for $150. I know I can find one cheaper. I think I'm going to try a dual band router and a firestick and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice.

Bill I bought a nice dual band Linxsys at Walmart a couple weeks ago for less than 100.

Mangler and B'hambuck are spot on. Get your own router be it Linksys or Netgear Nighthawk and go with the Amazon Firestick. I've done that setup at a few locations and it's been rock solid.
