Bikers on the roads wouldn't be such a big deal if they would just get out of the way, they know when they have a line of cars stacked up behind them trying to get home after work but most of them just keep on going holding up traffic.

This all day everyday. They claim to have a right to be there yet pay zero dollars in taxes to pay for the road(s) they are riding on. And "I pay taxes on 6 other vehicles" doesn't cut it in my view . Pay one on your bike. And as long as the laws allows this they will continue to be hit while riding.

Bike lanes and very wide sidewalks are becoming commonplace in most cities.

It will take a while for it to filter down to AL of course.

Dedicated bike lanes would be fantastic if the bikers would use them and not still get in the road lanes, claiming their "rights" to be there.

As for only riding on trails, "the living room" or greenways or whatever, that's BS. Doesn't matter if you think bikes are necessary. What's in question is whether they should pay something (tag) and how to coexist with them. Unless legislatures repeal current biking laws and/or ban them from roads, they're not going away no matter what anyone thinks or how you feel about them.

Conversely, I'm always amazed at how many liberals are bikers - liberals who otherwise claim-scream nonstop that everyone should pay their fair share, pay taxes "for the good of society" and so forth, but mention a tag permit/fee to them and they literally go crazy.

So, hey, pay your fair share. Ten or 15 bucks a year at least. You're already paying taxes on other vehicles? Big whoop. If you're going to use the road then pay for the vehicle. Goes for motorcycles, golf carts or anything else.

Clem you know that when the scream about paying your fair share they mean you and I, not themselves..

Riding a bike in the street is like taking a cart full of groceries through the 10 items or less register.

Not to steal this thread, but golf carts are just as bad in many areas. No headlights, tags and young kids driving them on roads when they are too young to have a drivers license.

The bicycles around here don't follow the rules of the road. I see them all the time running red lights and crossing the road when the pedestrian cross is on.

I find it interesting that all these people here would be fine with bikes if they had a tag. so I guess that takes out the speed issue. Also, there is no minimum speed for vehicles on local roads so that isn't a legit argument.
Bikes do have headlights and tail lights. Just like motorcycles we don't have to have a turn signal, we use hand signals for braking and turning.

They are illegal to have on the road too.

I'm not a bike rider, but I don't understand all the butthurt about bikes. I've never had an issue with them. Just folks out exercising. Basically means you live in a nice area.

I've been driving cross country before and come up on a group complete with spandex. There were around 20 and they spread out and blocked the whole road for several miles. They thought it was funny.

Have any of y'all talked to your legislators about changing this? Y'all seem pretty worked up about it. I figure some laws need to be changed right? After all they're not breaking any?

As greedy as most municipalities are I think they are overlooking a good source of revenue. I think all vehicles traveling on public roads should have to have tags and insurance.

There has been talk in other states (California) on charging electric and battery operated cars a mileage fee. Due to the fact that these cars dont use gas and therefore dont pay taxes to maintain the roads.

From a safety point of view they should say every vehicle must have tags, headlights, brake\tail lights, and insurance. Why should bicycle riders not have to contribute anything.

I love my country, but don't trust my government.
