if you take out all the advertisements you don't have much left to any of them.
Nothing new here. Advertising and print publishing have been peas-and-carrots since the start of commercial printing. Just like with Television and Radio. You cannot pay the bills by giving away stuff for free. That's why newspapers still get the majority (almost all, actually) of revenue from the print product and not online, despite the huge push to digital. As for which ones are worth getting, it's whichever one(s) that makes you happiest. Buy a couple at the store and read through them. Then decide. I like all the ones mentioned above, but then again I enjoy print products and a variety of writing styles, topics and opinions. The Sportsman magazines are state-specific but I enjoy them, too, for Louisiana, Mississippi and the Carolinas.

I used to get Alabama Game and Fish but not anymore. Dr. B I used to love this magazine, but it has really fallen off the last 5-10 years. Son and I both were pictured in the magazine several times, but they have now taken the personal touch out of it. Oh well, that is life.

Teacher One, if I may ask what makes you think they took the personal touch out of Alabama Game & Fish magazine?
The Game & Fish publications are nationwide and have used basically a formula for pubs for the last 30+ years based on the calendar's hunting and fishing each month. In the Southeast, for example, January would be late season deer, winter bass, late-season ducks, maybe a saltwater story. February is small game, bass and crappie, post-season deer, hogs, get ready for turkeys, etc. March-April are turkeys and fishing.
Their format hasn't changed much in 30+ years. They still use many of the same writers and often have local flavor in the stories. What kind of personal touch have they supposedly lost?

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.
My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

I used to read Gray's Sporting Journal pretty regularly and still pick up a copy now and then. Sporting Classics is pretty good, too, for a variety.

I enjoy Sports Afield. It showcases stories on hunting that I will probably never have the chance to enjoy. I also like to pick up some of the Western hunting magazines from time to time when I'm in a store that sells these magazines.
Deer & Deer Hunting used to be one of my favorites, but it has gone the way of other deer magazines in recent years. Every story becomes which grunt call / bow / scent / seed blend or other product they are pimping. I quit NAWT many years ago because every hunter who killed a big buck was panning for endorsement deals in the article.
